Bikes on Melbourne trains? What are the rules? When (if at all)
can passengers put bikes on suburban trains?

Good Morning,
Bikes are free on Melbourne suburban trains
except in peak hour, when carriage is discretionary and you may be hit
with a concession fare. Off peak and weekends are no problem at all.
This is a lot better than Sydney or Adelaide, which have much greater
limitations, or Hobart, which hasn't had suburban trains since 1980.
When the train is crowded, bikes generally go in the doorway nearest
either end of the train, at other times, anywhere you like. I have bene
running bikes around on suburban trains since the days of Red Rattlers
and it's yet to change, apart from those silly barrier which can be
difficult to get through.
Regards,
Ray.

The broad gauge we have here means that the train carriages
are wider than average. Outside of peak times, we take our
tandems on them without inconveniencing other passengers.

bikes ARE NOT charged even during peak periods, just discouraged.
An inspector pulled that one on me a few months ago so i said "Prove it".
he fumbled for his little rulebook and then started shuffling on the spot when he realised he was wrong :D :D :D
Tried the ol' cop thing of not admitting how stoopid he looked but instead tried pinging me for 'having dirty shoes'.
"Cleaner than your train, mate".
I waved and smiled as he got off and was last seen buying fastfood at Camberwell station

They dropped the peak hour charge a few months ago
