how do I make a custom avatar?

Cause then you don't have an avatar that really looks like you do....
(btw - my avatar resides on my website and is linked to this forum through the user control panel "edit avatar" and I drew it myself in Adobe Illustrator, then converted it to a .gif file in Photoshop)
