Total Novice - Bike to work - Advice please!

Hi! I am a total novice and am going to get a bike through a employee benefits scheme. I'm going to bike to work, but would like to do some leisure rides on a weekend. Any suggestions as to what I should look for? Recommendations on models? General advice?
