  1. Hi-Ya

I've been riding a specialized rockhopper for a couple of months and am loving it (mostly road riding)๐Ÿ™‚

The only problem i've got is a really odd creak coming from the cranks, it get worse as i add the power. I figured my chain might have been the culprit, so its been swapped but the creak is still there. its getting quite loud and i'm getting a tad concerned.

Any ideas what it could be, the only thing in my mind at the mo is the bottom bracket, but its only done 300 ish miles...... should i be lubing it???

Noises like that are really hard to pin down, it could be the bottom bracket, pedals or even the seat. As for lubing the botom bracket it probably has sealed bearings and can't be lubed. Check that the cups are not loose. Another trick I've heard of it to remove the cups and wrap some Teflon pipe tape round the threads before installing them again.
    Good luck.

these noises are a difficult to identify. I had a similar problem and went around checking the cranks were tight, chainring bolts, checked the block was secure, pedals etc etc etc....and it went away. It does come back after 200 miles but is sorted after a good service. The BB could be on its way out. Once you've done a good check and the problems still there take it to a local dealer with a good mechanic take it in and see what they reckon.

  4. Thanks for the info, i hadn't even thought of the seat post .....

it seems to be getting worse..... might bite the bullett and get a pro to have a look at it

    Thanks again ๐Ÿ˜„

  5. If you hear a click/creak every 2-3 pedal strokes chances are it is a tight/un-lubed link in the chain. Look at the chain and pedal backwards to identify sticky links.

If you unweight your pedals, and still hear the creak when you hit bumps, chances are it is your saddle rails or seat post. Grease the seat post and seat tube opening generously. If you have a removable seat post clamp, take it off, apply grease to the outside of the seat tube and reinstall. Take your saddle off, apply a thin coat of grease to the rails and reinstall.

Another culprit to a creak when the pedals are unweighted is a crack in one of the frame welds. This can be a lot harder to find, and much more expensive to remedy.

If you hear the creak only while applying pressure to the pedals, and hear it every pedal stroke, it could be your cassette/freehub, bottom bracket, cranks or pedals. Take your cassette off, grease the freehub body and reinstall the cassette. Take your bottom bracket out, grease the hell out of your frame's bottom bracket shell, the bottom bracket cups, pretty much everything but where the cranks slide onto the spindle. Make sure all your chainring bolts are tight. Remove your pedals, grease the threads and reinstall. If you are running toe clip type pedals, ensure the bolts holding your pedal cage on are tight. If you are using clipless, clean the cleat trapping mechanism well (this is the one part of the bike you can use a high-pressure water hose to clean) apply wax/oil to anything and everything that moves.

    Cheers,
    Juba

don't worry this is nothing bad i've had this problem too.
all you need to do is pull your crank arms and grease the spindle on the out side with a wheel bareing grease and this will do the trick.

  7. Might be seatpost but I bet it's your pedals. Grab them and see if one is looser on it's spindle than the other. Squirt some WD40 on them and see if it goes away.

  8. i bet that your cranks are a little loose. my bike was doing the same thing and i narrowed it to the cranks. just tighten the hell out of them. i usually check all my bolts before i go on a long ride, and ocationally my cranks loosen themselves up.

  9. i get creaking noises all the time especially after riding in wet weather. 9 times out of 10 (for me) its the pedal spindle bearing just letting you know that they still exist, just a squirt of a light lube oil and they're quiet again...

(i have cheap pedals...but i love them all the same)

  10. thanks for the hints, well i took my bike down to the shop, they tightened the cranks, grease all around, and the creeking is still there....

as it goes i decided to go clipless, got some new pedals, fitted them, and the noise has gone.... so it looks like the culprit was the pedal spindels.

thanks for all the help ๐Ÿ˜„

that was to be my second suggestion, i have to go and strip my pedals on my mtb since thats doing the same thing. but its more of a crack (really loud crack) i just hope i haven't managed to bend yet another pedal axel
