Why so much hatred in the posts?

That's nothin'!! You should check out http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/ , they must be all about 15 years old. There's 10 times the "dissin'" going on over there.

Actually, I think this forum is mostly pretty good, although there's two guys who are regularly, unnecessarily antagonistic.

Agreed. However, I've been on many forums before and this one isn't so bad really. Compared to some anyway. But no matter what there's always going to be a few rotten apples.😠

but seriously, some people get perhaps a bit overly enthusiastic about the subject. I look at it as passion, carried to the extreme. The more esoteric the comparison, the more heated the discussion - Campy vs Shimano, frame material, or the Dreaded Seat Post Thread.

It is interesting to note that any perceived animosity seems to be found largely in the equipment forum, where it's a matter of personal choice (and money, I suppose). Discourse on the forums dedicated to actually riding the bike tend to be much more congenial. Make of that what you will...

There are different levels of moderation.There is very little here that I have seen that needs moderated. And, there is nothing wrong with 'check your info' ,or 'you don't know what you are talking about'.It's probably saying it exactly the way is it by someone that actually knows BS from the real thing. BS pandered as real info,by someone with a real lack of it is wrorthless.Don't know why the aversion to calling out hooey and BS mongers?? Now, A$$ kicking is more serious business,and should always have a referee.

I really don't want to bring attention to particular people. I guess I am hoping that people would read this and maybe realize that some of it is a bit childish. There is nothing wrong with passion. I myself have alot of passion when it comes to fitness and health. However, I do value opinions of others. And I also realize that I am not always correct. Not trying to cause problems here, because I have really gain some very valuable knowledge from the forums, but just felt like giving my perspective on some of what I've read.

Actually, I agree with the original poster...as I've said to my husband many times, I thought the football (soccer) boards were nasty until I started on the cycling boards. For example, any thread on doping, or Lance Armstrong,. The racing "fans" are some of the worst offenders for sheer level of nasty and total disrespect.

I think it's because you can have an attitude and no one will get you.

So far on this forum I have talked my talk and attempted to walk my walk, but the other person backed down.

IN general, people just have more 'bigness' on the internet.

All good points. The internet tends to wash people of their civility. The anonymity and safety of a forum gives folks the ability to be extremely blunt; whether that's refreshingly frank (as boudreaux might suggest) or a microcosm for the crumbling of modern society is a matter of taste.

I'd have to agree, though; of the forums I hang around, this one is relatively mild-mannered. Not even doping, Armstrong, or the dampening properties of carbon can hold a candle to a fierce debate over music, college sports, or politics.

The most surreal example of online barbarism, though, exists (oddly enough) on the Yahoo forums. If internet forums are a landscape of varying cultures, Cyclingforums.com is a pleasant township in Vermont and the Yahoo forums are some horrid, secluded fascist/tribal/cannibal/drug-addled/no-plumbing nightmare colony of 14 year old racists and suburban [censored] locked in combat on a sweaty island of the cost of Equador. You can't spend more than 5 minutes reading posts on any subject without glancing outside your window, expecting to see four horsemen galloping from Mars.

It can sometimes (obviously) be difficult to interpret the written word, that's why we have to have these silly smily faces, etc. :eek: 🙂 :p :o 😄

But more seriously, people shouldn't "dis" people they know absolutely nothing about; you never know what effect your words can have on someone. I have a couple of close relatives that have suffered mental health problems, and the slightest comment can send them off for another stay in the "resting hospital". Some might say that people so sensitive shouldn't put themselves in such a situation, but I would disagree.

Thought that it was interesting and wanted to know others points of view on it. But again, I'm new here and I certainly don't want to come in and whine. So this is my last post on this. Hopefully as I learn the sport more, I have good informative posts to offer.

Actually some of the posters are very childish and unduly critical. In my opinion of course. I guess I am just greatful they are using a keyboard rather than a Deer Rifle to disipate and vent their fustrations.

And this "why waste our time" business -- [censored]!! You don't have to read everything. You have to read ANYTHING. It's like complaining to a company for puting up a billboard, saying: "you just wasted my time erecting that billboard because I read it."

I came from a nitro RC car forum. Everyone there was 13yo-15yo. The mods were 15yo also on this 2000 member forum. Every newbie asked the same questions.. "how fast". This place and bikeforums.net are heavenly compared to that place.

See, if I'd used a smiley face, you would have realised that was post was satirical (British sense of Humour), rather than dissing you. I see from your reply that my post hit the mark.

I did feel that your second post was euphemistically apologetic for your first and the two contradicted each other! Just my opinion.

In that context, and with the inference I was making on your implication, I felt my post was constructive.

The bottom line is that when conversing here, we are missing all of the non-verbal information we would get in a face to face conversation, as well as the issue of not knowing the other person.

I look forward to seeing other threads of yours on cycling, rather than the internet! I might be able to be some small help.
