Apparently there is a great skill in composing the field to avoid this, the slowest (you have to give your best time on the entry

We rarely had to concern ourselves with such niceties - as a tandem being set off behind a bunch of (even more) oddballs on solo and tandem trikes we usually had plenty of rabbits to chase down!
