have a white M, the only one in the world AFAIK. I reckon they made
    the by-law bit up!

Parisians have a sensible attitude to foreign invaders. I am told
that when the Germans invaded Paris in 1940 the lifts on the Eiffel
Tower stopped working. They were terribly sorry, but special parts
were needed from England to repair the lifts and in the current
circumstances these could not be obtained. Not many of the Master
Race wanted to walk up the tower and so there are few pictures of
occupying Germans at the top. On the day Paris was liberated the
lifts started working again, after the "damaged" parts had been dug
    up and re-instated.

Love it! have also heard a story where two Americans walked into a
Resto on the Champs and ordered kidneys in Madeira sauce; the waiter
produced the wine list and offered his personal recomendation. The two
would-be diners instead ordered two Cokes at which the waiter said
    "non" and threw them out!
