Cracks in Sturmey-Archer hubs

People who have never worked on these hubs commonly have an exaggerated
idea of how difficult they are to work on.

To somebody who has replaced shutter tapes in 1930s Contax rangefinder
cameras, or removed the mirror box from a Nikkormat EL, this is a piece
of cake. ;-)

Indeed- back in Schwinn School, one test was to disassemble three
three-speed hubs (AW, S3C, and a Shimano), mix up the parts, then
reassemble them after a lunch break. It wasn't that tough- then. I
doubt I could do it now.

I did resilver the RF mirror [1] in a Minoltina-S once, which was pretty
fiddly.

[1] using stick-on auto window film. It worked well.

Since you see the crack, you obviously have it apart. Replace it and be
done with it!

I thought that it might be common for these hubs to develop benign
cracks in this location. Is that possible? I reckon that it will be
hard to find a spare AW axle. Of course, I can just look for another
bike.

When I worked in a shop we used to have contests to see how quickly we
could tear down and rebuild a S-A AW hub. The winning times got well
below 5 minutes for hubs that were already clean and didn't need any
replacement parts.

The test you describe sounds like even more fun. ;-)
