  1. So what's the deal? What are top tube protectors for?
What are they protecting the top tube from? Or are
they protecting something else from the top tube?

I've seen them on heaps of bikes on fixedgeargallery
and now I've found where you buy them:
    http://www.businesscycles.com/frameprotect.htm

Somebody please put me out of my misery and tell
me what the hell these are for!!

Let go of your bars and they can swing around and
clang into your toptube. Also, with big travel, triple-crown
suspension forks, the tops of the forks can also swing
into the top tube, hence the need for "protection".

They are to protect the top tube from damage if/when the
handle bars are turned so far they hit the tube. I wish I'd
had one of these on my mountain bike when some paint was
gouged out by the bar ends when the bike fell over.

On road bikes, the danger is from the the front brake damaging
the down tube. I remember that old Campagnolo brakes used to
have a rubber ring around the adjustment screw that made it easier
to use as well as protecting against down tube damage.

    Cheers,
    Duncan.

Not these ones. These are to stop scratches on paint.

Look closely at Vegemite and you'll see a custom one:

(elec tape ;-) now in black... )

The ones you are thinking of only seem to be available
on BMX's and only usually on the small ones. No self
respecting BMXer would leave a big chunk of foam
    on their toptube! 'ARDCORE!

and for when parking/leaning it up against posts etc???

Amazes me that all these parking doovers installed are made of metal and then just left bare. A rubber coating or 'wrap' would make them far better... (must email that one off to BV, seeing as they designed the darned things...)

My guess is they stop the tube being dented by the drop bars when the
forks flop round (no cables to stop the flop)I had a google and
couldn't come up with any clues either.
