If you are on the street/road, follow the same rules of the road that cars do. If you are on trails/paths with other cyclists, common courtesy will suffice, with a couple of excepts:

    1. It is generally common for cyclists to wave at one another when they pass going opposite directions.

    2. Because bikes are very quiet -- you can't hear one coming from behind you -- it is common courtesy to let another cyclist know you are about to pass by saying something like "on your left" or "on your right" depending on which side you're passing on. I do the same for people who walking on paths or along side the road, otherwise you can really startle them.

Rules on our multi-user trail system are low speeds for cyclists (under 20 kph I believe) and cyclists yield to pedestrians. We're also required to have a bell or sounding device so we can advise pedestrians that we're going to overtake them.

Generally speaking, traffic is maintained to the right side of the trail except when overtaking another user.

General safety warning: Pedestrians are a traffic hazard. Children are a completely unpredictable traffic hazard. Dogs are a rule onto themselves. Hence the requirement for lowered speeds. I tend to stay off the trails because pedestrian traffic is insane to drive in. I'll take the roads where at least I can predict what someone's going to do.
