  1. I'm going to be doing some touring in Virginia soon. I need
    some route advice.

Is there a good way to get from Manassas to Charlottesville?
I was thinking of taking Rt 28 to Remington, Rt 29 to Culpeper, 522
and 615 to Orange, 15, 231, and 22 to Charlottesville. Is this a good
route? Anyone have a better one?

Is Rt 29 the best to ride from Charlottesville to Lynchburg?

Is 221 from Lynchburg to Roanoke a good ride?

    TIA

    Peter

    28, 29, 15, are major highways, not
good. Not sure about the others.

I recently went out and scouted Rt 231, and 22 from Orange to Ch'ville, and
they are no shoulder, 50-55mph highways, with a lot of truck traffic, at
least on weekdays. In addition to no shoulder, those are one lane each way,
so the only way cars can pass is to wait until approaching traffic is
clear. However it is a very picturesque route!

I've ridden Rt 29 South (Charl. to Lynchburg) back in the late 60s, but I
wouldn't want to ride it now. Perhaps early morning on the weekends you
could do it, but it wouldn't be fun. Also can be quite hilly.

Have you considered the Blue Ridge Parkway?

There's a book out called Road Biking Va you might want to check out. I got
a copy at Barnes & Noble recently.

    Good luck!

Is 221 the main drag from Lynchburg to Roanoke? If so, 20 years ago it
was like an interstate with driveways.

    Look for the back roads...

  5. Rt 28 has been the scene of a number of fatal automobile accidents.
Rt 29 is a busy 4 lane highway with no shoulder. I would not ride
either unless Iwanted to commit suicide. There is a bood that lists
long rides around the DC area. I will check it and see if I can get
    you a route.
