Their new Centaur pulls trials-like wheelies. I keep expecting the machine
to bounce up in the air and start backhopping, but it doesn't.... I gotta
    stop watching trials videos...

That thing is rad. Now I can see some very practical implications.

12% impressed by the tech, 88% sickened by the thought of these [censored] on trails.

My thoughts too, but I figured it's (slightly) better than the gas powered
ones we have to deal with now.

It looks cool until you picture 50 fat, lazy lawyers and accountants
barreling down the sidewalk doing one handed wheelies and talking on
    their cell phone.

I'm all behind the concept. I'm not at all behind its public use. Thank
God they've been banned in a bunch of cities.

And people wonder why America is the Land of the Obese - they keep inventing
new ways to not walk anywhere.

    Sheesh!

Already? I was looking to them to create pressure for a whole new
infrastructure - something between sidewalks and motorways... Oh well...

Yeah, me too, but I got a friend that is confined to a wheelchair; A
little modification to that invention and it could be a beautiful thing
    for him and others.

Essentially.... but with enough users to make authorities take them seriously.
Last time I observed bike lanes in the Philadelphia area (Manyunk, riding into
Philly from Paoli day-before-yesterday) cars were routinely straddling the lane
    marker line.

If by "modification" you mean "replace with gas powered 4WD ATV" then you
    are getting closer.

Thank God they've been banned in a bunch of cities.

In downtown Spokane you can rent them from the bike rental place that rents
all sorts of bike toys for use on the Centennial Trail.(paved bike trail
system) The rental agreement specifically prohibits "jousting" much to my
    son's disappointment.

That's excellent; the best part being it was added for a *reason*!

Kamen doesn't believe in bike lanes, he believes his inventions are the
next step in the evolution of walking and those that walk must be too
    poor to buy his invention.

From context, I guess Kamen is the guy who invented the Segway. If so, he's
certainly a visionary in one way....but I'd say he's way off base thinking that
Segway traffic and pedestrian traffic will mix well.

Personally, I don't even think bikes and pedestrians are that great a mix -
albeit certainly doable; just look at the Ocean City and Atlantic City New
Jersey boardwalks on a Sunday morning. I think it's something really basic,
like way down at the reptile-brain level not being comfortable with mass in
    motion nearby.

All the time here too in Gainesville. A Hummer H2, no less, ran me off the
bike lane, and I had to bunny-hop the curb on the road bike yesterday.

On other parts of campus, they put a raised 5" square-cross-section divider
between the bike lane and the regular lane, replacing the white painted
lines. I hate these because people walk perpendicular to these dividers,
and if they walk out directly in front of you, where can you go? The
sidewalk, which is packed with people, or the road, which requires a pretty
    high hop.

    I rented a bike there once. :-)

Rode it clear to some other state on the trail as I recall. I was trying
to find out what the numbers were counting down to. The middle of nowhere
as it turned out. hehe I didn't plan the trip very well; I got so hungry
the pine trees started to smell tasty to me.
