simultated unicycle bearing holders?

  1. hey everyone,

    lets say I wanted to simulate a unicycle bearing holder (secret project)

    I want to have a metal bar...with a bearing spinning freely at the
    end...like one unicycle leg would be.

    Is there anything like this in production so i don't have to order
    bearing caps and weld them to the ends of metal bars?

  2. So you're reinventing the wheel?

    I don't fully understand what you're trying to accomplish (what's a
    unicycle leg?), but if you're going to have a bearing in your assembly,
    the balls will need raceways through which to travel. The raceways
    (there must be two) are the structures which handle all the stresses and
    strains between the axle and the frame.

    If you weld a raceway of a size used in most unicycles, chances are
    you'd deform the raceway and ruin any chance of making a decent bearing.
    If the welding doesn't deform the raceway, the frame most likely will.
    You'd need to make some custom outer raceways that look like the
    lollipop-style bearing holders in order to accomodate the strains
    induced by riding.

    The more secretive you are, the less help the community can give you.
    If you really want help with your design, you need to disclose your
    plans!

    By raceway do you mean a bearing part or what holds a bearing? If you
    mean what holds a bearing like in the picture I dont think a little
    distortion will hurt its holding abilaties.

    Brian could you use an old frame and just use a leg off of there or that
    might be to short or just not what you're looking for?
    Note: you dont have to answer why you wouldn't want to use it if it lets
    out your secret.

    It's hard to picture this. Are you trying to make a one legged unicycle
    fork? Kind of like a Cannondale Lefty suspension fork?

    You can change a tire while still in the forks...that's pretty cool!
    (bikes get many more flats than uni's) They are alos more durable as
    they use roller bearings and square tubing, something that would be way
    too heavy if done on both sides

    I think my best option will be to just weld the bearing caps of normal
    unicycles and weld them to the end, as I did in my 2 wheeler project,
    that did not deform them at all.

    I was kinda hoping not to do this, as I am going to need 6 of them 🙁

    By unicycle leg, I meant one side from under the crown to the bearing
    bolts
