free", it is to make a living racing bikes. I'm sure the fee would be

Part of the problem with US Pros is they feel that they are above it

them.
If the rider is worth a damn, then the $9000 fee would be offset by
winnings in no time.

Having riders pay a team to race for them is a [censored] Ponzi scheme if
I've heard one.

No racer will make that $9,000 back in prize winnings because it's a lot
harder to get in the money in pro races. Show me where a Subway rider
got a top 5 in an NRC race this year?

That team will implode with a business plan like that.

Maybe they can get that fatso Jared who eats Subway sandwiches to race
for them. He makes more money from doing commercials than the Subway
riders do from racing.

That makes this team sort of a "last chance saloon". Still, there are
occasionally talented riders that get stuck without a team and nothing could
be worse than racing unattached. Don't you think it makes more sense to join
under those terms than trying to do it all on your own? As long as the
contract allows you to join a paying team at any time, that seems like a
good safety net for some. I remember Bobby Julich was racing unattached
before Motorola (when he raced only a few months in late '96 IIRC) and
Cofidis. I don't remember when he left the national team though...I want to
say after the '92 Olympics (the last to leave out pro cyclists) but I just
don't recall. I think he was on the LA Sheriffs from '93...anyway, I hope
you get the idea.
