presta tubes with unthreaded stems

  1. Who makes presta tubes with unthreaded valve-stems?
    I've been using Torelli Extra-lites but I'd like to
    find something a little more "heavy duty" (and maybe
    cheaper) that will hold air pressure better than the
    Torellis, which I find myself topping off every day
    or two.

    What difference does threaded/non- make? IME, if you can get an unthreaded stem
    thru the rim, you can get a threaded stem thru the rim. 'course, we could be
    talking about something new-fangled that I haven't tried yet...

    I've always just bought "tubes." Cheap, reliable, and plentiful.

    What difference does threaded/non- make? IME, if you can get an
    unthreaded stem thru the rim, you can get a threaded stem thru the
    rim. 'course, we could be talking about something new-fangled that I
    haven't tried yet...

    I've always just bought "tubes." Cheap, reliable, and plentiful.

    For one thing my pumps seems to fit better on unthreaded stems. Especially
    my CO2 pump from SKS

    answer! Ah, the internet community.

    Anyway, I think Michelin tubes are smooth-stemmed. At least, they were many
    years ago last time I used them, and judging from current web photos the
    still look to be. I'm also a big afficionado of non-threaded stems, and
    honestly I never saw the need for threads anyway. In 15 years of riding and
    half a dozen or more pairs of wheels, I've never used a valve-stem nut
    anyway. I'm currently using Torellis but I agree 100% they're not very
    good - constantly lose air and they don't seem to blow out quickly around
    the valve area. I'll be watching this thread for replacment suggestions!

  7. I use the Michelin ultra light tubes with nice smooth valve stems for
    exactly the reasons you give: I got tired of ripping the valve stems out
    when removing my Silca chuck and I also find the threads tend to rip up the
    gromet in the chuck.

    Hi, Vittoria Ultralite comes with a 51mm threadless stem.

    I still have to add air every couple of days. I got in the habit of
    checking my tires, before every ride and topping off as needed. It
    only takes a couple of minutes, I use a digital Topeak Smart gauge and
    Joe Blow Sport pump.

    In a pinch I picked up a tube at REI once and it was an unthreaded
    stem (long). No idea who made, I'll see if I still have the box. But
    if definitely was not Michelin, Torreli, or Salsa.

    I don't have problems with the threads on the shaft of the stem, but the threads
    around the tip, that the cap screws onto. Depending on the brand, these keep my
    pump from getting a good seal, making it impossible to put more than 30-40 psi
    of air in the tire. I swapped a tire the other day, and went through 3 tubes
    before I found one with a valve stem that worked with my pump. I think the one
    that worked was a Continental.

    Stuff like this can be really frustrating, especially because there's no excuse
    for it. Distributors must know their stuff stinks, but sell it anyway -- like
    the Specialized MTB tubes that the stems fell out of, which shops continued to
    sell for years, or those [censored] plastic Mt. Zefal mini pumps.

    This sounds like a pump problem. These Presta stems with threads as
    we commonly see them have been in use for a long time without problem.
    When the new generation of riders came along without the ability to
    operate the old Silca frame pumps, with which tubulars were inflated
    daily, they and their Campagnolo pump chucks vanished. I have no
    trouble inflating tires with these pumps and my floor pump has a Silca
    chuck with a pressure relief button that works fine. In fact, the
    smooth stems sometimes get ejected by inflation pressure.

    It seems the separating stems were a general malaise for a while,
    indicating that possibly the same company made all the different brand
    packaged tubes. Now it seems to be thin sections at the tube splice.

    Where did you get a Silca Floor Pump with a pressure relief button?
    Was it modified? Never seen one with a relief button.

    This is a hose chuck made by Silca that was larger than the ones
    available more recently. I bored a 3mm hole in the side, put a
    mushroom head button with its stem through the hole and put an O-ring
    in the groove at the end of the stem. The chuck uses the common
    grommet used by Silca floor pump chucks.

    The drawing of the double acting pump has been here on the web.

    Just the same. the standard Silca pump chuck seals well against a
    threaded valve stem.

    Yes, I remember the diagram, can't recall the chuck.

    The mushroom head button you're reffering to is a "pop-off valve" set to a
    measured pressure, say 110psi?

    Sounds like a great idea and easy to do, that way you can pump your tires
    in the dark without looking at the gage.

    Threaded valve stems wear the rubber washers of pumps much faster.

    Not at all. The pump gauge works and you stop pumping when the
    desired pressure is reached. Then you press the button and easily
    pull the hose chuck from the stem.

    No. That wouldn't work for a floor pump that is used to pump tires,
    anyone's tires, thin or fat. Besides, I have no idea how to put such
    a valve in that pump head, adjustable to a specific pressure.
    Besides, as we mentioned in this thread, pressure during the stroke
    varies widely and only represents tire inflation pressure at the end
    of the stroke. That means the pop-off valve would have to be highly
    intelligent.

    This sounds more like the seal on your pump is shot.

    sell for years, or those [censored] plastic Mt. Zefal mini pumps.

    Sounds like a headache for sure. But before you get too frazzled with it try
    servicing the pump. Decent pumps have replaceable rings. At the least try
    removing yours and reversing it to see if that helps.
