Ok explain this one:
I have been struggling with a slipping dynamo for the last few weeks
[1]. Last night I was getting desperate, it was raining and the
roller was slipping continuously, hence I only had my rear backup LED.
In my desperation I decided to try running the roller on the wheel rim
as I thought that might be more dry than the tyre - of course this did
not work either. So I gave up and re-align the roller back on the tyre
only to find that the dynamo suddenly seemed to get traction and
started working.
I realised, in my haste, I had not aligned the roller back onto the
dynamo sidewall of the tyre, but onto the smooth part of the tyre
between the dynamo track and the rim.
Why would the roller work on the smooth tyre and not on the ridged
dynamo track of the tyre?
I will just say that I carefully aligned the bottle to run
tangentially with the wheel each time I made an adjustment. I have
also tried miss-aligning the bottle to stop slipping; I think someone
once recommended this here - but this has never worked for me.
