OK. November, not October but you knew that. So, it looks like I
should at least "try" the National. I'll have to look around for pics
of the waterfall. You've got me curious. I'll bring the helmet cam and
we'll see where it goes from there. I couldn't do Horsethief Bench, so
if it's anything like that, I'll sit and gaze at it a while.

A good place to start or end a ride. At one time they had plastic
growlers ... local riders could take the growlers hide them under a
rock on Oak creek ... ride come back to the crossing ... cold beer
waiting. Still a good palce to pick up a local ride.

extremely enjoyable nevertheless.

extremely enjoyable nevertheless.

Looks like fun. I'll give it a shot (on the left side). I guess the
worst that can happen is I bust myself up 🙂. I've walked some trails
in South Mountain on a few trips to Phoenix in the past (before XC
MTBing). I am familiar with the area by car, so we'll see how it goes
on the bike.

to go riding (nice thing about being a contract engineer!). Where abouts
are you staying and what kind of bike are you looking at renting? I can
call around to see what the rates are. If you use clipless pedals, bring
them with you and have the shop you rent from put them on. Makes life much
simpler than worrying about the airline trashing your bike.

I'm attending a conference at the Scottsdale Princess (nice hotel, yeh I
know) where I'll be staying but I have a car and I've driven all over
the Phoenix area umteenth times before. I'll be coming in two days
earlier than the conference (10/3 arrive and conference starts 10/6) and
staying with my sister-in-law (lives in Scottsdale) for two nights.
10/4 and 10/5 were the days I was looking to get out with one of those
being in Sedona. I guess I'll rent a full suspension, I'm pretty
useless on a hardtail. I saw a few places on the Internet that rent in
that area. I'll be bringing my pedals, some tools, 'bak, shoes, and
helmet (because of the helmet cam) with me.

I have an iron case for my bike and have put it on the plane a few
times. The only thing that ever happens is the TSA doesn't seal it good
after they inspect it. So I've learned to zip tie all the loose bits to
the frame.

If you're staying in Scottsdale then you might want to think about riding
the Pima & Dynamite area just North of the Princess. Not too technical but
some of the funnest ST around the Fenix area as long as you don't get run
over by moto's! Long gradual climbs going out and rip roaring slalom type
stuff coming down. There's always Trail 100 in North Central Fenix, too.
Another un-technical route but has some short steep climbs that can be a
challenge going up or coming down. Trail 100 runs about 12 miles end to end
so you can get a nice 2.5 hour out and back (and the trail starts just a a
mile from my house.....gloat intended). It's heavily travelled on weekends
but I've done the out and back during the week and never seen any body.
Pretty amazing when you consider this trail is in the heart of 2.5 million
people.

From the sound of it you probably checked places such as Landis, Airpark or
Showcase for rentals up in the Scottsdale area? I'm not sure what kind of
bike you're on but a cheap rental is just bad, rideable but bad! What frame
size? If I know a little bit more I may be able to find a buddy with an
extra bike. I have an extra 956 Proflex, medium frame with the funky Girven
4 bar front suspension (with a girly man seat for the wife.....) Climbs
well but not too great in the downhill stuff.

Let me know, I don't mind checking around.

Those trails sound nice and if they are closer to the hotel then thats a
plus, but I don't mind driving. The rentals I checked were in Mesa and
Phoenix. I believe they were lower end treks. I ride a small (15"😉
frame (I have a Yeti Kokopelli and Ellsworth Id in the FS stable). I'm
slow on the climbs but usually make up time elsewhere. I'll shoot you
an email later in the week and we can pick a time and place to ride.

I don't know about the Phoenix area...but a just got back from two days
riding in Sedona and that was not enough time.
