my average was 26kph too for 90k so you'll nail it next time.
    Apologies for losing you 🙁
    bit guilty-feeling here...

definetly gotta sync dem speedos. when we cruise along the flat and you guys say "Im doing 30" mine says 24! 😉

I cracked seriously just before Hurstbridge. I was really underfuelled
    for that ride.

I thought I was last. I was with Claes's mate Dave for a while after St
Andrews but then he made the effort to get back into the group and I ran
out of steam. So were you behind me Nick (I had a suspicion there was
someone else left to come but I was gettign a bit delerious)? If so,
I'll be really spewing because I would have loved an excuse to slow down
a bit (even more than I was). I even considered jumping on the train at
Wattle Glen and catching it to Heidelberg. Back to the 50km route for me
next time, or to Panton Hill and wait for the group at Hurstbridge bakery.

Dave just told me that one of the toughest times of the day was trying to get back to the group, it took him 15 mins. I am usally quite careful with not dropping people just like that, but today I was just suffering so had to mind myself most the time. I hope you got back ok.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanx to all of you. Dave, the Irish one, is new to cycling and he really really enjoyed it. Part of it was the ride, the views, the speed. But a big part are you guys, my friend got a perfect intro into cycling, both the suffering bit, some social chat, and some speed and sun. 🙂
So FD, he did enjoy it massively so no more accusations about being a bad friend, I prepared him the best I could. 🙂 He, did not bonk for your info 😉

One more thing, how do you guys survive on one bottle? I drank four bottles in total, and still [censored] yellow when I got home, after another 600 ml. Maybe it is just me that is a sweaty bugger. 🙂 So, see you all next sunday, I will probably do a 140 k ride on saturday, but in a slow tempo so hopefully me and me butt will be up for it. Cheers.

Your mates were ace - Dave is a freak, coming out for a ninety kay ride over
hills in his first week of cycling. Must be a fit [censored]. I had a great
time and hope everyone else did too. I think I'll have to slow down - I have
a bad feeling the bunch break up was my fault, pushing a bit too hard after
St Andrews. Sorry if that's the case.

It was my fault for not taking enough calories and water. Although
I'm not really used to doing a 90km ride with that many hills in it.

Wierd experience - one minute I'm riding along near the front and then
all of a sudden there's just no power anymore. My HR was really low too
    - just couldn't get those wheels to turn fast enough.

I'll be back next week to see if 1) I can crack 90km/h and 2) not die in
    the [censored] 🙂

Not only was Dave's his first week of cycling it was also done on a brand
new bike that probably had less than 50kms on it when he left home today. I
noticed along the way that the normal settling in thing were happening such
as derailer cables starting to stretch causing him some pretty crappy gear
changes toward the latter part of the ride. A service will fix that up.

I can help with the rudimentary stuff like that. Now, the bike had exactly 75 k on it before today. 35 k tuesday, first ride, thursday 40 k, second ride, at high tempo. Anyway, yeah he is resonably fit, runs and swims a bit. Plus do not forget, he is IRISH, the never lay down and die, they fight. 🙂

I don't really know how most of the others manage on just one bottle either.
I'm usually fairly well hydrated before the start of the ride but I usually,
for this ride, carry two 700ml bottles of Endura (an electrolyte/magnesium
powder mixed with water) and on a morning like today will usually drink both
by the 100km mark. Personally I don't really think this is enough once the
weather gets even warmer again so in this case I also carry a single serve
quantity of Evervit or High5 powder to mix with the water I take on along
the way. On days when it's 35+ riding home from work it's pretty normal for
me to go through two 700ml bottles over the 26km distance of the trip.

Good to meet you today and thanks for the ride
    see you next sunday

Sorry I didn't realise you dropped of the back that badly. I knew Dave was
back there somewhere but I didn't realise you where not able to stay in
    contact with Dave.

It's a bit of a bummer when "the bonk" happens. Once you've done the ride a
couple of times you'll soon learn where and where not to push hard. You'll
also get a better idea of your food requirements as well. It's probably
better to carry too much food than not enough just in case you get into
trouble as per what happened to you today.

    Quoted message said:

Then I wasn't sure which way you went so I stopped at the bakery in
Diamond Ck and refuelled, then I kept going through Greensborough,
    Rosanna, Heidelberg, Clifton Hill etc.

Clifton Hill??? I gather that is where you live.

Still, I had a great time - I finished with a respectable (for me) average
of just on 26km/h over 90km and a personal best top speed
    of 87.2km/h

Looks like you recovered pretty well after you got something in your gut.
26km/h seems to be the avg speed across the board.

    😄

    Dont.
Make sure i drain one (usually) before hand. Im a morning person so a 5-6am wakey is nothing unusual for moi. time to (again usually 🙄 ) drink and eat brekky beforehand.
I wel land truly drain another one byt the time we get to the Kangaroo ground Primary School. I fill up there (you wouldnt have witnessed that bit) and then try and fill up again somewhere else (BP sometimes in Greensborough?). I consumed 2 nana's in the first 3/4 of the ride but the lack of carbs last night and no brekky meant I DID bonk! So an advise I gave Dave befor we parted was 'Do as I say, not as I do' 🙄

PS that Bakery/Generalstore where those other guys stopped might be worth investigating next time. wonder who they were? they mentioned (the front 2) that they do it semi-regularly. I struggled to hold their wheel going up to Shoppingtown as they sat on 17-20kph up the hill but later realised we do that fairly regularly anyway so musta been cos I wasnt warmed up yet...

PPS Nicks black decals on glossyblack steel frame was very sexy.
    A model-T Ford bike anyone? 😄

  16. damn,

sounds like my hangover caused me to miss a good ride. i tried to get out on the road later in the day but the body said NO!!!!!, im going to put in a few rides during the week to make up for yesterday.

Now to something relevant. How much pain did you get from your saddle on sunday?
10 would be standing up all way, not being able to sit at all.
1 would be not even noticing the saddle, the way we all want it to be.
For me I would rate it at 8-9 first ten mins. Then 6-7 for about 2 hours, some discomfort but stading up in a hill made it bearable, perhaps, then back to 8-9, meaning that standing up for a few strokes every couple of minutes, sitting on the side of my leg when not pedalling. I hope you see what I mean. I am just trying to see how much of this [censored] I am to cope with before tossing the darn thing out. I am on the verge of going down to fitzroy cycles after work to try the Specialized Alias in different widths and get my ass measured in process. 😉

One of the big surprises to me has been how well the std OCR2 saddle has
fit me. On your 1-10 scale I'd say most of the ride would be a 3, ie.
happy to sit but occasionally need to stand for a stretch (and given the
amount of climbing we do there is plenty of opportunity to do that). It
was only near the end of the ride I need to stand a bit more (which of
course is when I'm least capable of standing). From memory you were
struggling on that saddle around Kangaroo Ground which wasn't even half
way. Maybe your saddle needs to go or your setup needs to change or both.

Yeah, I have tried moving it around, back and forth seem to make no difference. But the angle does, it is slightly slightly pointing down now, if I try to change that so it is level or points slightly up, it kills me within a minute.
