  1. I have a pain just below the Patella in my left knee. It only
presents itself when I run and then only after about a mile or so.
When I perform other activities(e.g. ice hockey, elliptical runner,
hiking) I never experience the pain but as the weather is nice
here(North Carolina) and I can run on the company jogging trail during
lunch I would like to find a solution. Two things I have considered
are going to see an Orthopedic doctor and going to a specialty store
to have my feet measured for a custom pair of shoes. Neither are
solutions that will be inexpensive. Should I start with a brace and
go from there? Are all braces equal? Any help on some direction I
can take to end the pain will be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. Insert you favorite 'Doc it hurts when I do <this>', Doc:'Don't
    do <that> anymore' joke here.

    Good.

    Bad.

    NO!!!!

  3. This is like a drunk saying "I only [censored] my pants when I'm
    loaded......should I wear a diaper when I drink"?

  4. Do you know that there are people who run for their entire lives and never
have a knee problem? Do you know that some people have the worst possable
feet for running and bad knees on top of this and yet insist on running? Do
    you know this person?

    Yes.

She wears one all the time anyways...

  7. Same pain for me ( appear after 20min and does last long after I stop
), among other back and joints problems.

Rule number 1 : never trust a piece of medical advice you read on the
    web.
Rule number 2 : never totally trust a piece of medical advice you
heard on the benches by the trackfield.

I did the whole shebang : chiro + sport physician + ortho. ( Okay
Healthcare are well-covered by the social security in France: you may
immigrate if you speak French and enjoy socialism)

End results : the Chiro really helped. The two others said, at the
cost of 145€, "do not forget to stretch your muscles" and "take it
easy for a few months, so that the body get adjusted to the stress".

Anyway, considering the price of sporting gear, a physician is cheap
by comparison and does not make his money by enslaving vietnames kids
    in some sweatshop...

( I am just being provocative for the fun of it... )

I don't think there's any reason to think that you need special custom
shoes. Nor do see where you get the idea that you are going to need an
orthopedic brace. Sounds like you'll have to check in with a doctor and
you'll likely wind up with recommendation for some physical therapy.
    Good luck.
