Short note before I disappear again --
The 24 hour relay I'd mentioned was this past weekend. We got
enormous help from the weather, which was cloudy and drizzly, but
not the expected Charlie-induced winds and torrential downpours.
Drizzle broke about 8 PM.
Though we didn't do it by plan, it looks like most of us averaged
about our 10k race pace. The leading teams (we were mid-pack) seemed
to be running more like their 5k race pace.
Knowing what our bodies could tolerate and required for long periods,
by way of fluids/electrolytes/calories was probably a more important
thing than pacing.
After the first 8-10 legs (of 1600 meters), it definitely moved to a
matter, for me, of letting my legs do what they knew to do, and going
along for the ride. My pace and effort sense was gone, but the legs
were, by then, quite reliable at cranking out consistent miles.
Digression: This has cured me of thinking about 100 mile trail races,
where I might be on my own legs for 24 hours straight even if it were
an 'easy' course and I were in good condition.
