  1. I'm considering running in the Free Press Marathon on Oct 24. I'm not
    currently a runner. 41 year-old male, 5 foot 7, 205 lbs. While I don't have
any delusions about getting into competitive shape in that time, I'm wondering
if I would be able to FINISH. Doesn't matter if I have to walk the last 5
miles, and finish dead last.<g> Is this even realistic? If not, then I'll
just work towards next year's race. Thanks for any help.

It is not very realistic, but it is not impossible.
Mainly, it depends on your current level of fitness to a large extent.

You don't mention your fitness level, whether you do other
sports activities, etc.. That could make some difference.
But, IMHO, 205lbs on a 5'7" frame is a lot of extra weight.
You could end up hurting yourself if you tried to go from
0 to a marathon in 2 months with absolutely no prior running
experience. Not to forget that at age 41, you are more likely
to injure yourself than a 20 year old in a similar situation.
If it's nothing urgent/binding, I would suggest working towards
    next year's race.

In the meantime, hang around here and you'll get to learn stuff.
Also, check out the "Training Week" thread to get an idea of
how people train towards a marathon.

  3. I discourage you from doing this. You have no clue. You would be walking
long before the last 5 miles.

Start a good program of mixing walking and running and consider next year.

Remember that people posting to the Training Week thread may have been
running for years. Copying what they are doing could be a bad thing.

I certainly admire your enthusiasm, but that's just not the least bit
realistic. You are not the same indestructable teenager that you were 20+
    years ago.

Common wisdom is that you can usually make a one-time effort (with the
proper rest) which consists of a 30 - 33% increase over your longest
training day, so you would need to be able to run 18 miles comfortably in
training to make a one-time Marathon effort, and I think that's even pushing
it a bit. There's almost no way you're going to be able to go from 0 to 18
miles in two months at your age and condition. Even assuming that you plan
on walking the last 5 miles, you still need to be able to run 21 miles, so
    21 miles - 33% = 14 miles. Even then, going from 0 - 14 miles is a fair
piece of work in two months. If you were 21 years old again (and in decent
shape!) - *maybe* it might be doable. But at 41 years old? And a tad bit
overweight? I would VERY seriously recommend against it.

Think of it this way; at your age and condition (I'm guessing you're not a
bodybuilder, so that extra weight is mostly all fat), all you are probably
going to accomplish is hurting yourself, possibly very badly, and possibly
even in a permanent way. If you blow out a knee or an achilles tendon at
your age and condition, it's going to be a long, hard road to recovery, if
you ever recover at all. Running injuries occur most often due to
overtraining, and by doing what you are thinking about doing, you would be
doing the very definition of overtraining!

And frankly, to run a marathon decently (or enjoyably), you need to enjoy
the running itself. That much training over that short a period of time is
going to make you HATE running, probably forever.

Start now, start easy (real easy!) and plan for NEXT year. If you need some
intermediate goals, think about maybe a nice, easy 5k in November, maybe a
10k in March, a 1/2 marathon next July. Buy some books, read them, use the
web and research a *sensible* training plan. Learn to love to run, and
it'll change your life forever! Then, have a good marathon NEXT Oct and run
the whole thing! Now that's definitely an attainable goal.

I do wish you the best of luck in whatever path you choose.

    Regards,
    H.

  6. Ok, thanks for the replies! I'll work on next year's race. That's what I get
for putting it off so long...

    By way of comparison ..

    I am 40 - 6'3" & 224lbs.
Last Saturday I ran the furthest distance & longest duration so far.
    10 miles in 1h39m.
Next target is a half-marathon in less than 4 weeks.

Assuming I go for that and succeed, the next target would be the
Dublin City Marathon 5 weeks later.

If I run the half-marathon, that will be most I will ever have run. To
get from there to a full marathon in 5 weeks is, for me, not feasible
so the half-marathon will be the last such goal for me this year.

If you are not now at the stage where running 10 miles without a
break, or running 90 minutes without a break, I doubt you would be
able for 21 miles by end-October.

By all means go for it and prepare sensibly, but you may end up
    running out of time.

Go for next year's race and start running now.

If you ran this year you'd be fortunate to walk less than half of it.
You have a shot at finishing. However you would be done after the crew
has taken down the finish line.

I'm not being an elitist "I trained months for my marathon so should
you" type, heck go for it! Prove what a determined person can
accomplish. But be prepared to walk most of it and be prepared to hurt
an awful lot in the 5 days after. Assuming you don't injure yourself.

What you are thinking of doing has been done before.

  9. I ran the 2002 LA Marathon with just under 7 weeks of training.
My advice is start training now for next years Free Press. It takes the body at least 6-12 months to acclimate to that
    kind of abuse.

  10. You might be able to do it but it would seem to be a rather bad idea.

We're running because he has integrity.
We're running because he has character.
We're running because he is a leader.
And because of these things and many more,
We're RUNNING FOR BUSH "From Start...To Finish"!

When your sig is longer than your point... *plonk*

    Hey, that almost rhymes!

Besides, anyone who has the nerve to insinuate that Bush, of all people, has
"integrity" and "character", doesn't deserve any more of my attention span
    than he's already gotten.
