Your subject header was probably not chosen with any
great care, but that is probably understandable.

The shame is entirely on the security services: the
risk of a lone lunatic/prankster/protester/terrorist
must´ve been evident, the last ten kilometres of the
marathon were foreseeably the most critical and that
the threat against the leader(s) obviously the greatest.
The task of safeguarding him shouldn´t have been
practically impossible.

(Since the offender had already been convicted for
aggravated tresspass in a F1 race last year, it strikes
me that his entry into Greece should´ve been stopped.)

This is, of course, speculation, but I don´t think he
would´ve finished any higher than bronze in any case:
Baldini and Keflezighi were already closing in, the gap
Lima had on the two had just diminished by 14 seconds
to 28 seconds in less than two kilometres. It´s undeniable
that Lima lost somewhat more than the few seconds during
the incident itself, but IMHO his early pace was going
to take its toll anyway.

That said, it was a great, bold performance and he was
truly the Man of the Race!
