  1. I've been sedintary for most of my life and recently decided to get
into good physical condition. I've been on a walking regime (some
light jogging) for about ~12 weeks. I'm wanting to run but I'm finding
that I become winded very quickly and I have no endurance at all. I've
given up smoking recently beliving my endurance would finally take off
but alas it has not. Is there anything I can do to make serious gains
    in my cardiovascular system?

I've noticed in the body building arena there is a huge market of
products that help people advance and overcome thier genetics to
become ripped. Will any of those products help me get back my
    cardiovascular strength?

    anxiously awaiting your wisdom

How old are you? How long did you smoke for? How long since you quit? Without
these answers nobody can help you. But as a former smoker who now does 9 miles
a day I'll tell you it takes years for your lungs to improve, so just be
    patient.

  3. Another fitness indicator is your resting pulse rate. As you watch that over
the months, it should drop a few beats. Compare to a number from your last
physical. Dont obsess over this number, because stress, small illnesses
like colds, not getting enough sleep and even a large meal can make it go
    up temporarily.

Generally the only cardivascular shortcuts are blood doping and stimulants.
Both are temporary. A US guy just lost his Olympic medals for infusing extra
red blood cells. They found multiple DNA types in his blood.

This is fairly normal, especially if you're out of shape to begin with. It
takes a while to bring about the adaptions that lead to endurance performance
and if you're overweight, that's also a major hinderence.

    Just keep at it.

Jog continuously at a very slow pace (5mph or so). If you can't hold a pace
of 5mph, then walk-run until you can. Do this for a couple of months and unless
you're overweight or very old, you should be able to hold a steady pace.

    Most bodybuilding supplements are garbage.

If you're overweight, losing weight will make it easier to run.

You're confusing "endurance" with "work capacity" (or something
like that). I worked out on an elliptical machine for many months
before I felt comfortable shifting to running and I recorded the
    "calories burned" time.

I noticed that each month or so I could comfortably work out (for
30-45 minutes) at the level that was a challenge just within my
abilities just six weeks earlier. In hard numbers my "comfort
zone" was increasing by about 50 cal/month. At one point I even
hopped on a treadmill briefly to get the calories required to run
slowly, did the math, and got an estimate for how long it would
take me to run (4 months). That was fairly accurate - I was
run/walking long before that, but it was about 4 more months
before I could comfortably run without breaks for the same duration.

    That's work capacity.

Endurance is how long you can maintain that level of effort, and
aerobic endurance can be increased faster than work capacity.
That's why it's easier to add distance than speed.

In my recent experience it took me about six months to increase my
work capacity from sedentary to someone who could just run 3 miles
without a break. Usually. In the following six months my work
capacity only improved enough to change a 12:00 (or slower?) pace
at 3 miles to a 9:30 pace at 5 miles. But my endurance went from
around 45 minutes (4 miles) to 5+ hours (marathon this weekend).

In your case you have the work capacity to run/walk, but not
enough to run continuously. Have patience and don't push it -
you'll make faster progress if you stay in your aerobic zone and
take walking breaks than if you basically "sprint" every time and
never build up an aerobic base.

There's a huge market, but how much of it really works? Diuretics
just cause temporary water loss (dehydration, in other words), and
the "fat burning" compounds are nothing more than stimulants.
Legal uppers. Fatal uppers when people stack them too deeply.

There are some legal products that are helpful, but AFAIK they're
all nutritional support. Protein drinks, creatine, etc. They'll
make a difference but it takes time and a lot of hard work.

  6. Einstein, just stop jogging. You'll catch your breath in a couple of
minutes. Do you need us to explain anything else you should have
    learned when you were six?

This advice reminds me of the old recipe for rabbit stew. First
    catch a rabbit....

You want to lose weight the right way. First don't eat more
"because of the exercise." Then start to clean up your diet -
some easy ways to start are replacing one soda with bottled water
every day, getting a salad instead of a sandwich a few times/week,
etc. Weight loss of a pound/week might not sound like much, but
if you can keep it up for months it adds up to real weight loss.

Keep doing run/walk. Figure out the ratio of run/walk that you can
comfortably maintain for 30 minutes *without* getting completely winded
during the run segments. If that means 1 minute of running and 2 minutes of
walking right now, then do that. Every week shift the ratio slightly toward
more running. After a lifetime of being sedentary, plus being a recent
ex-smoker, it may take you 3-6 months to get to the point of being able to
run 30 minutes continuously at a slow pace. Run slowly--a "conversational
pace," slow enough to be able to talk. For now, aim to run 4 times a week
(walk or x-train on the other days if you like).

    There's a sample plan at
    http://www.prevention.com/cda/qamulti2002/0,2495,s1-6406,00.html
If you need to repeat some weeks, don't sweat it. To make improvements you
don't need to kill yourself, you just need to keep at it.

Keep at it. There will be a day where it all clicks into place. It may
take you a month or two to get there. You'll be running along and
you'll go past a mile and think "gee that wasn't too hard." Thats when
    you'll be there.

No. Cardiovascular comes from how your lungs and heart work. First
your lungs have to get through all the tar you were sucking down while
smoking. Then they have to learn to work effeciently. Then your
muscles have to learn to build more capilaries to promote oxygen
    delivery throughout your body.

it may take you a bit longer than the average bear with the damage

You ARE making serious gains to your whole body system. If you meant
to ask how to make FAST gains, then I have some snake oil for sale
    that only costs...

No, seriously now. The human body takes time to adjust. You didn't
get into bad physical condition quickly so don't expect to shake off
    the damage quickly.

You've taken the right start, walking regularly. Now to get the
running in there, don't just switch to sprinting. Try running at what
seems to be 50-70% of an all out sprint. Your pace should be slow
enough to still talk. When you get out of breath, switch back to
walking. The goal is to keep moving for a target amount of time. do
this 3 or 4 times a week (every other day or so). Even though this
isn't very demanding, your body (including your bones) needs time to
    adjust to the new stresses.

Initially the goal time would be fairly short, 10minutes is a good
start. Keep at it until you can run for the entire 10minutes with no
walking breaks. (If you are already going for longer walks (timewise),
then running can go right in the middle.)

Once you get to running for 10minutes straight, tehn you can gradually
increase the time. Try to keep the increase small. If you try too much
before your body is ready, you can hurt yourself. it may take
2-3months to get up to 30minutes. That is a first major milestone.
When you can run for 30minutes without walking breaks, you are all set
for basic fitness maintenance. If getting and being healthy is your
goal, then 30minutes three times a week is all you need for running.

before you get ripped (off), keep in mind that there are no real
shortcuts. And why do you think these products that are marketted for
body building have ANYTHING to do with building cardiovascular
strength? (It's like asking if a bigger car stereo will improve the

If you want to get and stay healthy, try living a fit and healthy
lifestyle for a while. It would be a lot cheaper. Running improves
Muscular, Skeletal, and cardiovascular systems. And it's a lot more
    fun than dietary suplements!

    Enjoy the run!

I've been quit for about a week now. I know it might be a bit too soon
to expect much. Any information or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

  14. It's hard to know what to tell you w/o knowing your height, weight,
age, etc. But the answer to your last question is emphatically no. As
for the problem you're having, the probable solution is simply to slow
down. If you're still short of breath, alternate walking and running.
Endurance doesn't "take off," no matter what you do. You have to build
it and that takes time. Keep at it and be patient.

'Get back'!?! Skimming over your first paragraph I am at a loss to
determine exactly *what* you hope to 'get back'. Based on your own
analysis you have never been fit, therefore you're treading a new path.

I'm sorry, old chap, but there is no quick fix. Despite what these idiot
rec.runners will suggest, you're looking at a year to eighteen months of
hard work, commitment, and perseverance. If you ARE serious, stick around

  16. DISGUSTED? Weeks ago, John Zogby pointed out
on his website that 47% of democrats don't just disagree with Bush--they
personally despise him. Among undecideds, Bush's job approval rating is 30%.
Thus, Zogby gives Kerry a 80-100 point advantage in the electoral college. In
4 years, we have gone from the largest federal budget surplus we have ever had
to the largest deficit we have ever had; From the largest job growth we have
ever had, to the first president since Herbert Hoover to have a net decline of
jobs during his tenure. Investors have done worse than during the Wategate
    years.

Bush's Chairman of the Council of Economic advisors believes that outsourcing
is good for the country (don't laugh, he said it); Certainly, we could find
someone in Bangalore, India who could do a better job.

    1. Social Security Surplus

BUSH PLEDGES NOT TO TOUCH SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS... "We're going to
keep the promise of Social Security and keep the government from
raiding the Social Security surplus." [President Bush, 3/3/01] ...BUSH
SPENDS SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS The New York Times reported that "the
president's new budget uses Social Security surpluses to pay for other
programs every year through 2013, ultimately diverting more than $1.4
trillion in Social Security funds to other purposes." [The New York
    Times, 2/6/02]

    2. Patient's Right to Sue

GOVERNOR BUSH VETOES PATIENTS' RIGHT TO SUE... "Despite his campaign
rhetoric in favor of a patients' bill of rights, Bush fought such a
bill tooth and nail as Texas governor, vetoing a bill coauthored by
Republican state Rep. John Smithee in 1995. He... constantly opposed a
patient's right to sue an HMO over coverage denied that resulted in
adverse health effects." [Salon, 2/7/01] ...CANDIDATE BUSH PRAISES
TEXAS PATIENTS' RIGHT TO SUE... "We're one of the first states that
said you can sue an HMO for denying you proper coverage... It's time
for our nation to come together and do what's right for the people.
And I think this is right for the people. You know, I support a
national patients' bill of rights, Mr. Vice President. And I want all
people covered. I don't want the law to supersede good law like we've
got in Texas." [Governor Bush, 10/17/00] ...PRESIDENT BUSH'S
ADMINISTRATION ARGUES AGAINST RIGHT TO SUE "To let two Texas
consumers, Juan Davila and Ruby R. Calad, sue their managed-care
companies for wrongful denials of medical benefits ‘would be to
completely undermine' federal law regulating employee benefits,
Assistant Solicitor General James A. Feldman said at oral argument
March 23. Moreover, the administration's brief attacked the policy
rationale for Texas's law, which is similar to statutes on the books
in nine other states." [Washington Post, 4/5/04]

    3. Tobacco Buyout

BUSH SUPPORTS CURRENT TOBACCO FARMERS' QUOTA SYSTEM... "They've got

ADMINISTRATION WILL SUPPORT FEDERAL BUYOUT OF TOBACCO QUOTAS "The
administration is open to a buyout." [White House spokeswoman Jeanie
    Mamo, 6/18/04]

    4. North Korea

BUSH WILL NOT OFFER NUCLEAR NORTH KOREA INCENTIVES TO DISARM... "We
developed a bold approach under which, if the North addressed our
long-standing concerns, the United States was prepared to take
important steps that would have significantly improved the lives of
the North Korean people. Now that North Korea's covert nuclear weapons
program has come to light, we are unable to pursue this approach."
[President's Statement, 11/15/02] ...BUSH ADMINISTRATION OFFERS NORTH
KOREA INCENTIVES TO DISARM"Well, we will work to take steps to ease
their political and economic isolation. So there would be -- what you
would see would be some provisional or temporary proposals that would
only lead to lasting benefit after North Korea dismantles its nuclear
programs. So there would be some provisional or temporary efforts of
that nature." [White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, 6/23/04]

    5. Abortion

BUSH SUPPORTS A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE... "Bush said he...favors
leaving up to a woman and her doctor the abortion question." [The

    6. OPEC

BUSH PROMISES TO FORCE OPEC TO LOWER PRICES... "What I think the
president ought to do [when gas prices spike] is he ought to get on
the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your
spigots...And the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC
members to lower the price." [President Bush, 1/26/00] ...BUSH REFUSES
TO LOBBY OPEC LEADERS With gas prices soaring in the United States at
the beginning of 2004, the Miami Herald reported the president refused
to "personally lobby oil cartel leaders to change their minds." [Miami
    Herald, 4/1/04]

    7. Iraq Funding

BUSH SPOKESMAN DENIES NEED FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR THE REST OF
2004... "We do not anticipate requesting supplemental funding for '04"
[White House Budget Director Joshua Bolton, 2/2/04] ...BUSH REQUESTS
ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR IRAQ FOR 2004 "I am requesting that Congress
establish a $25 billion contingency reserve fund for the coming fiscal
year to meet all commitments to our troops." [President Bush,
    Statement by President, 5/5/04]

    8. Condoleeza Rice Testimony

BUSH SPOKESMAN SAYS RICE WON'T TESTIFY AS 'A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE'...
"Again, this is not her personal preference; this goes back to a
matter of principle. There is a separation of powers issue involved
here. Historically, White House staffers do not testify before
legislative bodies. So it's a matter of principle, not a matter of
preference." [White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, 3/9/04]
....BUSH ORDERS RICE TO TESTIFY: "Today I have informed the Commission
on Terrorist Attacks Against the United States that my National
Security Advisor, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, will provide public
    testimony." [President Bush, 3/30/04]

    9. Science

BUSH PLEDGES TO ISSUE REGULATIONS BASED ON SCIENCE..."I think we ought
to have high standards set by agencies that rely upon science, not by
what may feel good or what sounds good." [then-Governor George W.
Bush, 1/15/00] ...BUSH ADMINISTRATION REGULATIONS IGNORE SCIENCE "60
leading scientists—including Nobel laureates, leading medical experts,
former federal agency directors and university chairs and
presidents—issued a statement calling for regulatory and legislative
action to restore scientific integrity to federal policymaking.
According to the scientists, the Bush administration has, among other
abuses, suppressed and distorted scientific analysis from federal
agencies, and taken actions that have undermined the quality of
scientific advisory panels." [Union of Concerned Scientists, 2/18/04]

    10. Ahmed Chalabi

BUSH INVITES CHALABI TO STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS...President Bush

    11. Department of Homeland Security

BUSH OPPOSES THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY..."So, creating a
Cabinet office doesn't solve the problem. You still will have agencies
within the federal government that have to be coordinated. So the
answer is that creating a Cabinet post doesn't solve anything." [White
House spokesman Ari Fleischer, 3/19/02] ...BUSH SUPPORTS THE
DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY "So tonight, I ask the Congress to
join me in creating a single, permanent department with an overriding
and urgent mission: securing the homeland of America and protecting

Most of those body building products are scams IMHO. Protein is good for
rebuilding muscle but you can get it from egg whites and eating lots of
    meat.

Have you considered training with a heart rate monitor? It's very possible
for you to train while walking, depending on your heart rate. I run around
    158 and when I walk it's around 138. That's pretty close.

  20. Thanks everyone for your information, I'm going to stick with it. I'll
    get there sooner or later.

I'm just frustrated because over the last few months I believe I've
experienced every type of pain that be brought to bear upon my legs
however they have adapted and recovered rather quickly. I just wish my
    lungs/heart would follow along.

    Thanks again,

    Tyler
