Never lot a mind, but anyone found a GPS - can't look at it to find out where I left it ;-) "Dave Fawthrop" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Monkey got pretty [censored] being trapped in a mountain for hundreds of years and being forced to eat iron every day, but he didn't go mad.
Seriously though, I can't think of many better jobs. You know the film don't you? An entire hotel at your disposal for the whole winter, surrounded by mountains, all the food you need, loads of peace and quiet. All you have to do it check the boiler now and again and the rest of the time is yours to do with as you please. Sounds pretty close to paradise to me.

No.

Not bad, I get the impression the hotel is empty of staff? Is this Jack Nicholson in The Shining. He ends up going mad and trying to kill his family. "Here's Johnny!!" being the iconic moment in the film. It was copied for an episode of The Simpsons and there's a "Here's Brucey!!" moment in Finding Nemo.
Ian.
ps. I have my own Shining scenario mapped out for me this winter as I will completely on my own in my job from Mid October to March.

This is what I can't understand. I'd love to have a long period of peace and quiet like that. I suppose most people couldn't handle it, most people in my experience seem to need some human contact. I don't feel that way though. The more time I spend alone the more I like it. The longer I go without seeing people out in the hills the more I like it and the less I want to return to civilisation. I guess a lot of people who don't understand me would disagree, but I believe I have the right kind of psyche to spend a lot of time alone. I was very envious of that guy who lived alone in a hut in Svalbard that Michael Palin met. I could totally relate to where he was coming from.

We recognise a human mind because we've got one of our own. We keep it similar to other minds, and therefore recognisably sane and normal, by conversation. If you stop talking to people you become different, i.e., weird, i.e., in the perception of a normalised conversationalist, you have lost your mind.
Possibly, probably even. Wouldn't bother me though. Might bother other people! ;-)

I don't want to counter it. I don't consider it weirdness, more a spiritual state of mind (but not in the religious sense).

Yes, sort of (you need to watch the film). He goes there with his family so it's not as if he's completely on his own.

We are social animals, its quite unusual to be relaxed about long periods of isolation, after all, "solitary" is used as a punishment. -- Mike Reid If god wanted us to be vegetarians he wouldn't have made animals out of meat. I think it's more that he's "shut himself away" that "of course" makes him lose his mind. More to do with long periods of isolation with a freaky child and a nasty case of writer's block than the mountain per se. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

What!? Is Ian going to the Dales too?
ISTR that Ian said he was starting a new job up The Dales but i could easily have confused him with someone else. He is a confusing sort of guy. :-)

To some extent you can counter the progressive weirdness of mountain isolation by talking to yourself. Or the mountain. On certain rare but impressive occasions mountains have talked to me.
