Joy! As there were only 320 applicants for the 300 places, they've decided to accept all the entries in the expectation of some natural wastage between now and next May. How extremely exciting! :-)
Incidentally, on the website it invites people who might like to go to submit names to a standby list. See http://www.tgochallenge.co.uk/ if in any way interested.

I feel quite jealous. Better get some good training in!

Gulp! Llongyfarchiadau! (Congratulations!) Enjoy yourself keeping fit and well between now and then - and make sure you're not one of the 'wasted' ones. :-) -- I try to be a good example to my children, but they just see me as a dire warning.

Absolutely! I'd decided not to go away this w/e as the forecast is penc again and my bum's still sore from fighting tussocks through the mattress last weekend, but now I'm wondering whether to go after all!

Well, sounds like you shouldn't go with this Tussocks person, whoever he is. -- Chris Malcolm [email hidden] +44 (0)131 651 3445 DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/]

I was looking forward to the letter from Roger Smith saying "Dear Gordon, Welcome to GOC26" but you've gone and pre-empted it! Ah well, congrats anyway. Enjoy the experience. May see you somewhere along the trail. Cheers! Gordon.

Well congratulations and enjoy it, but the whole idea rather puzzles me.
If you don't get on why not just go there, do it and (admittedly) fail to get the teeshirt. You could even have a teeshirt printed yourself..

That's alright if you're a bit of a loner. But the Challenge is a social event too. It becomes something of a club as you make more and more new friends over the years, enjoying a pint with them in the pub, bantering in remote bothies, bedding down in bunkhouses, giving advice or help to newcomers along the way and sharing experiences at the Park Hotel when it's all over. Believe me, it becomes quite addictive. The T-shirt is just something clean to wear on the train journey home. Cheers! Gordon.

Yes, I see. I've experienced something similar with the Coast to Coast, where a camaradie soon builds up with the others doing it in sync with you. But I think I've actually changed, and indeed at heart I am a loner, at least during the walking. The pint in the pub with others still attracts, but even that not as much as spending the night alone in the hills.

Indeed. There's nothing I like better than being alone in the hills in my wee tent for in spite of all I said I only met two other Challengers throughout the whole crossing this year. But I speak for the majority. A lot of Challengers derive a great deal of pleasure sharing their evenings with other like-minded people at various stages of the crossing - particularly at the halfway point at the so-called 'Braemar Gathering'. And for first timers in particular it's re-assuring to know there are old stagers around to offer advise, help or moral support if the need arises. Cheers! Gordon

Speaking as one who has done an independant crossing, the support and benefits from the challenge are useful. Also if you havent spent years memorising where all the bridges are etc... and spend little time in the Highlands the route vetting is a godsend.

Erm...
<wriggle, wriggle...>
Soon!
It's just that blowing up those balloons seems like such hard work! D'you wanna try it? Just say the word and I'll send it along with a big supply of balloons. I laid in a supply for the whole Pennine Way! :-) (Seriously, let me know if you'd like to try it - I'll happily send it.)
