  1. I just recieved my cholesterol panel back. I'm pleased.

The last blood test I had was during a hospital stay for pericarditis.
I was around 325-340 lbs (would increase to 350 by 1/2004). My total
cholesterol and LDLs were not a problem before and still aren't
despite minor increases. The bad/borderlines levels have all improved.
    My LDL could be lower.

First blood test performed June 1, 2002 around 325-340 lbs.
I started Atkins on January 12, 2003 at 350 lbs.
Second blood test performd July 28th 2004 around 275 lbs.

NOTE: I do not shy away from fatty foods.

CHANGES FROM June 2002 to July 2004

TOTAL CHOLESTEROL - INCREASED from 173.0 to 189.0 (9% increase)
Was DESIRABLE, current level is DESIRABLE
    Desirable 0-200, Borderline 200-239, Risk 240+

HDL (good ones) - INCREASED from 24.5 to 48.0 (96% increase)
Was AT RISK, current level is BORDERLINE or NORMAL
    Desirable 60+, Borderline 40-60, Risk 0-40;
    NORMAL 32-75

LDL (bad ones) - INCREASED from 117.3 to 130.0 (10% increase)
Was NORMAL or LOW, current level is BORDERLINE
    Desirable 0-100, Low 101-129, Borderline 130-159,
    High 160-189, Very High 190+;
    or NORMAL <125

    TRIGLCERIDES - DECREASED from 156.0 to 55.0 (65% reduction)
Was BORDERLINE, current level is very DESIRABLE
    Desirable 0-150, Borderline 150-199, Risk 200+

CHD Risk Level - DECREASED from 7.1 to 3.9
Was HIGHEST RISK, current level is LOW RISK
    Lowest 0-3.8, Low 3.9-4.7, Moderate 4.8-5.9,
    High 6.0-6.9, Highest 7.0+

Yes but until we have another carrot to chance for better heart health
we can only work within the numbers doctors currently having us
    chance.

Even at my heaviest weight Cholesterol numbers were decent to good. So
genetically cholesterol probably isn't what would cause a heart
problem for me. However my father's family has multiple generations of
heart failure, strokes, and circulatory problems. They haven't lived
past 60 for a few generations. So the fly-in-the-ointment for me is
probably the same as the 50% of fatal heart attacks that happen with
    good cholesterol numbers.

My friend's parents are an interest flip-side. Mother, healthy
age-appropriate weight, walks, takes vitamins, but bad cholesterol,
heart attack at 55. Father morbidly obese, less active, physically
can't handle walking without strain and heavy breathing because of
the weight--(very scary just to see him around the house) cholesterol
    numbers are fantastic.
