    "Fad diets

Many 'fad' diets become widely popular for a short period of time, only to
fade out. Although some fade from popularity due to being ineffective, some
merely lose the public's interest. Judging their nutritional merit can be
especially difficult given that most diet proponents locate medical
professionals to back up their work. Examples of such fads include the
grapefruit diet, low-fat diets, and Atkins."

There is a movement afoot that contends that all "diets" are fad diets.
Anything beyond "eat less and exercise more" is considered a "fad" diet.
Those who make such statements don't understand how difficult it can be to
simply eat less for a lot of people.

All diets ARE fad diets when they are treated as the latest fashion, as in,
it's "in". Atkins seems to be going through a phase where, despite the
fact that it is indeed a perfect fit for SOME people, the holy grail, and
the answer to their lifelong prayers, it is being touted as a "for
    everyone" diet.

All diets have a "new discovery" phase and get treated in a faddish manner.
The downside to this, is it hurts the people for whom Atkins indeed "fits",
as they get trivialized as people who are just "following a fad".

If someone were to TODAY follow a diet that is no longer in the headlines,
they wouldn't be called "fad dieting". If they had followed it then they
    would have been.

So, given the above characteristics, Atkins is indeed a "fad diet", given
all the food product companies rushing to make everything "low carb" so
people will continue to buy their stuff.

I do like how somebody finally called low-fat a fad.

Since the Atkins diet has been enormously popular and successful since
the 70s, I think it has withstood the test of time and is more than a
    fad.

    That was extremely well-said.

Oh yes, I certainly do agree. However it is currently being given fad
status due to it's popularity. The people for whom it really works are
being drowned out by all the fad dieters who stop eating spaghetti one day
a week, buy all kinds of Atkins candy bars and call it "doing low carb".

I think once all the hypermania about Atkins settles down and the media at
large is ready to take a real look at low-carbing in general, it will lose
    its fad status.

It hasn't been "enormously popular since the 70s". Atkins popularity waned
a lot during the 80s and 90s. Currently it is back to fad status. Don't
get me wrong, I am 100% Pro Atkins, but many of the people who have jumped
on the bandwagon are making it a fad, because they don't bother to take the
time to learn what it really is and actually follow it!

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that claiming to follow the
Atkins plan but not actually doing so is the real fad diet. Atkins itself
works great for a lot of people and is neither a fad nor really a diet, in
    the commonly-used sense.

Or, the demand/supply of the marketplace is working and companies are
changing their food offerings to include less sugar and more fiber due to
the overwhelming demand of the public for healthier foods.

Well, Atkins may be a fad but I do think that several principles that he

Over thirty years doesn't exactly qualify Atkins as a fad.

It's current zooming popularity is likely a fad, but low fat
lasted 30 years so you never know.

The low fat fad has now lasted about 80 years and has made the US the
fattest people on earth. I predict that the low carb fad will last
until we are all nice and thin. Might be another 30 years or 300.

You are making the supposition that everyone in the US has been adhering to
a low fat diet. That is impossible to prove or even to accomplish! Don't
generalize, it makes your arguments go up in smoke.

  18. Well, it may be a fad for many people. According to CNBC polls show LC is
not as popular as it once was. Who knows. I can't see me eating LC for
life, but if I had blood issues, I would. LC is certainly easy to stay on.
