Sneaking about behind the trees! At first I couldn't hear them
moving, probably because of the noise of the river.

    Quoted message said:

In fact, they were probably wearing mufflers on their hooves.

I think everytime I stopped, they stopped too. They were probably more
scared of me than I was of them!

    Quoted message said:

I wonder whether they've put you down as an apparition? You may have
    entered sheepy lore! 🙂

That did cross my mind. I must have looked a very strange sight,
shrouded in a ball of light moving through the blackness...

Wha? Y'mean the concept of women and screaming? I'd have thought it

Ah yes, The eye-balls in the sky...

Running joke... The dog went on holiday with the kids the same time
every year and the crab astronomers would predict the return of the
    phenomonon.

They planned rockets to penetrate the sky of their pool to learn more,
while naysayers would protest at the risk of destroying the fabric of
    the "pooliverse".

Polar Bears? Fortunately for me I've only seen their tracks but one of
the lads in another group on our expedition to Svalbard woke up to
find one with its head in his tent.

I s'pose that is marginally better than waking up to find his tent in
    its head.

    Quoted message said:

My own personal best is about 7
million midges which invaded the tent when I opened the zip at Rannoch
Moor. Midges....Polar Bear...midges?....I'll stick with the midges.

Better the devil you know, eh?

If you don't know what they are there are two really scary noises in nature.

    Quoted message said:

    1. The cry of the fox (classic female screaming sound)
    2. The noise made by rutting deer. God only knows how you would describe it
but it sounds like not of this Earth

    3. Peacocks. Their scream sounds frighteningly unearthly. If you don't
know it you start imagining dragons, griffins, etc..

I can vouch for that. Memories of the night we moored our hire
cruiser overnight at a remote part of the River Thames, only to be
awakened at about 4am by such a cacophony.
We had chosen a spot close to a Peacock sanctuary. :-(
