Touring wheels

peter-<< I am going to build a pair of touring wheels T217 rims, Specialized
small /
medium flange hubs . I shall be using 28mm tyres and touring with rear
panniers staying at BBs. What is the better for the above application 3X or
4X,can some one advise on the spoke lengths for each >><BR><BR>

3 cross if 36 hole(hopefully 36 not 32 hole)

Should have pointed out that the rims & hubs are 40 Hole

3 cross or 4 cross really really doesn't matter. Brandt proved that
there is no functional difference. When I was a wheel builder -- yes I
really got paid for it -- I based my decision on which size spokes were
available. That's how little it matters.

Congrats on choosing 40 spokes. I might even call it overkill, but why
not buy some insurance?

A bike shop should be able to tell you what lengths to use. While you're
at it, maybe you should buy the spokes there, since they'd be doing you
a service by telling you what you need.

What brand spokes do you plan to use? I love DT.

I notice there are lots of spoke length calculators on the web. I found
them with google, using "spoke length calculator" as a search term.

Use bigger tires and load in the French way, handlebar bag and front panniers.

Panaracer makes awesome FAT tires called Pasela. I'm using 35mm tires that
measure darn close to 35. . . compared to the 32mm Soma tires I was using
that measured about 22mm. . . There are "TourGuard" versions of the Pasela
that use a Kevlar belt for puncture resistance. . . and they are high
thread-count casings so quite light for wire bead tires.

On 40 spoke wheels, low-flange hubs, 4-cross should improve spoke durability
with loaded touring.

If you want 700x28 you have to buy the Pasela in 700x32. Here are the
actual dimensions from Pasela website.

I regularly use this tire on my tandem and has proven satisfactory.

When building a 4x x 40 hole, 700xc wheel, the spokes are usually
300mm+. You'll find a wider selection at your LBS of ~295s. In my
experience, there's been no difference in the durablility of the hub
flange because it has that tiny bit extra metal for 4x between hole
and outer edge of flange.
