I posted some time ago that I wanted to build a wheel using an old and
somewhat damaged rim that I had on hand (rim pictures at
http://www.pbase.com/jacobe/inbox).
Generally this idea was met with skepticism, apparently it was doubtful
that the rim was in fact round and true like I claimed, and the rough
sidewall surfaces would make braking impossible or difficult. Other
opinions I received from friends examining the rim ranged from 'This rim
wouldn't work with rim brakes even if it were new' to 'The eyelet rust
will compromise the strength of the eyelets and the nipples won't turn'.
Well I went ahead and built the wheel anyway, cause when you need a wheel
you need a wheel. I'm happy to report that the wheel built up round and
true, evenly tensioned and perfectly dished. There is some vibration that
can be felt when applying the brakes, but it doesn't hinder braking power
or modulation. I expect that shortened rim and brake pad life is all I
need to worry about.
I would even go so far as to say the wheel looks good in its new home, my
Bianchi road bike, which at the moment is my primary vehicle for commuting
and getting around. Relatively lightweight, and wearing brand new high
pressure contis, this wheel is FAST as well.
