Wanted: Ribbed washer for road brakes

you can also fake it successfully using a lock washer from the hardware store,
cheap and fast. a standard split washer will do the job ok, but a star washer
will be better. feel free to stack two or three star washers together, as they
are thin.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I even got one suggestion to go
around on garbage day to pick-off the part out of a thrown-out bike. I
figure it was mostly a joke but my cheapness and lack of pride to pick out
garbage should not be underestimated. I'm in Montreal, Canada and it's no
glacier (no snow yet) but it ain't California (where I lived for a year)
either. (Don't ask why I'd move from SoCal to SoCold...I was just a
child...but it is beautiful here too.) The cold and the early sunset hinder
me now, but come spring, watch your garbage - especially if you live in a
nice neighborhood...

ps I tried Third Hand but they have a min order of 10$ and Peter's offer was
too generous so I just ordered from Veccio's (with Shawn).

You can use the knurled washer that is on every packaged presta inner
tube. Just use a drill bit to ream it out a tiny bit.
