Are you talkng about the photo of the rider napping beside his tent? Don't
know where you get this 'not many smiling' bit. I see photos of happy,
contented riders at the end of the day. Yes, they are lying about relaxing.
I do that myself, once I have my tent up at the end of a full day's riding.
The scenes are no different to any other GVBR that I've been on, and I've
done 5 of them.

Only thing worse than media beat-ups is usenet beat-ups.

Most of the ones actually looking at the camera seem to
be smiling. The rest are dozing! I don't see too many
people smiling after ATB's or races but if it wasn't fun
or challenging we wouldn't be doing it.
Touring would be cool if I didn't have to fit in a job
and stuff around it..

Hope next year's 'free bike' comes in green so I can put it out with my garden clippings.

Yeah. I think 90% of the problems I had this year stem from the high
numbers. If you can be reasonably sure it'll be 3000 or less next year,
it's probably going to be a fair ride. If it hits more than that, I'd
hesitate. Beyond 5000, I'd be inclined to say "no way".

Do the NSW ride, anout 1000- 1500, better organised and of course a
nicer crowd of people in NSW!

Well hippy it depends on how cool it is to you, but not all touring is a 9
day mass epic. I run a regular job and family, but still make sure I get
away for a weekend tour every month or so. Then there's plenty of day tours.
Every Easter I do a 4 or 5 day tour and in summer usually do a 6 - 12 day
high country tour. All that as well as MTBing fills in my cycling activity
fairly well. In between I get to mow da lawn :-{

I'll be joining up with mbtc. There was mention of a weekend away in
the new year -- just bring your panniers, sleeping bag, tent, etc.

How was the rain tonight? I looked at the large dark red blobs all
over the radar before leaving, and thought I would make it. Then the
back bike light fell off, so I had to go back into the office to
sticky tape it back up. That cost 10 minutes. Then I had to do
shopping, since I had been away for over a week, and the queues were
super long (damn safeway haven't put on more staff, even though the
queues have increased dramatically over the last 2 months, at all time
of the night (even at 2:00am)). I was in the queue when the downpour
started. I discovered indeed my panniers are waterproof. Not my socks
though.

Batteries were flat, and my tripod broke, so photos of the spectacular
lightning were out of the question.

I made it to the track a little late, had a good session with no rain
and then got to my local Coles to find their power out.. you reckon
'your' queues were long! ;-)

My ex has my 10D so I didn't even bother with pics.. I did wander
around in the rain for a bit because the temp was still quite nice.

Hopefully it all buggers off so I can have a dry ride tonight.
