essential importance in navigating. This might be some special
queation concerning the geko 301.

Hi Rainer, the Geko 301 will tell you where you *are* in terms of
position and height to within a few metres. It will also give you a
bearing and tell you how far it is to your target, assuming that you
have entered the position of your target as a waypoint. The GPS will
show the distance to the target as a horizontal distance, not as a slope
distance.
What the Geko won't show you is the difference in elevation between
where you are now and the target. If you know the elevation of the
target then this isn't a problem, because the Geko will tell you the
elevation at your current position and all you need to do is to deduct
this from the elevation of the target to calculate the difference
between the two.
