D/A 9 vs. 10 cassette question

Yeah, it'll switch.Don't forget 10 speed shifters and chain. You'll also need a cassette lockring tool and chainwhip.

You're really asking two questions. The Shimano 10-speed cassettes are narrower than the 9-speeds (not what you would expect!). So to mount the 10-speed cassette on a 9-speed freehub, you insert a small spacer (comes with the casette) on the freehub before you mount the cassette, which in turn allows you to tighten the lockring.
But, as the previous post pointed out, you need the narrower 10-speed chain, and the 10-speed shifters (which I've seen referred to as "brifters" since they combine the brakes with the shift levers.) I've seen "10 speed upgrade" kits in the Colorado Cycling catalogue which include the parts you need. (I don't think you need to change the derailleurs, but I'm not certain about that.)

If derialers were needed,that omission would not have been made.

Yeah........

In my ignorance I see that I was naive in thinking that I could just slap that new cassette.

So we are talking the cassette itself, plus a chain, plus shifters, right?

Given Mr. Boudreaux previous post (terse as typical but this guy seems to know what he is talking about very well) no derailers.

Did I miss any other components?

And at that level I'd have to hand the thing to the LBS.

Frankly I am not concerned about spending/wasting a few hundred bucks, I just need to make sure that my components work well and properly.

OK, most of the 9->10 upgrade looks easy, but what about those who use Flat Bar Shifters, SL-R440/660, when Shimano have no plans for a 10 in this series, how do we modify them to shift 10?

What would be the point?

I wish to upgrade the running gear on the Felt to Ultegra 10, the shifter is the only setback.

Just a quick question regarding this thread. Can you put a DA 10 speed crank on a bike that has DA 9 speed without any other 10 speed upgrades or would you have to put a new rear cassette, front and rear derailer, chain...yada yada yada. Why? I'd like to put DA 10 on a bike that currently has 9 speed but I'd like to do it bit by bit (crank first). Thanks.

Curious, what is the difference between a 9 and a 10 DA crank? (in terms of gearing / size or other actual functional aspect?

I'm not really sure what the difference is. In terms of the functional aspect I'm pretty sure it weighs a bit less and is supposedly more rigid (not that I'd be able to feel the difference ) It would just be the first DA 10 upgrade on my bike. Any ideas?

FYI, cranks have no speeds.

You need a shiftmate device at the RD to make it 100% compatible.

Someone mentioned that the 10 speed cassettes are narrower than the 9. Is there any chance that a 10 speed cassette would fit on a 126mm spaced cassette hub? That would be interesting if it's possible.
