Burwood to CBD route?

Obviously not Burwood Hwy or Springvale Rd. On the south
side, you can go down Highbury Rd to Warrigal Rd, (a bit hilly), then on

rail trail and then onto Gardiners Creek trail into city. Bit
convoluted, but not a bad run.
On the north side, you can get onto Hawthorn Rd, then Eley Rd, then
probably straight down Riversdale Rd, anything else is a waste of
time.More traffic in peak hour, but nowhere near as bad as Toorak Rd.
There is an alternate route slightly further north on Prospect Hill Rd
onto Burwood Rd then Bridge Rd. Check them out and see what you think.

Whats wrong with Burwood Highway ?? I regularly ride Burwood Highway into and out of the city, especially when I am heading out to Mt Dandenong. Nice wide road and I have never had a problem with cars/driver behaviour on Burwood Highway, even on the quick sections from Knox City to Mitcham Road. Just my humble opinion anyway.

The only garbage section is when it turns into Toorak Rd, the road is a big garbage after that, but its still ok, I sometimes turn off down Warrigal Road and then left into High St Road all the way into the CBD area, works for me anyways

Could also try turning right into Camberwell Rd (after the worst section of
Toorak Rd.) and on to Riversdale Rd/Swan St. Seems to be generally
inoffensive traffic.

Worst thing about Toorak Rd is riding from Hartwell up to Burwood. Uphill
with regular cracks across the Rd. Kadunk, kadunk, kadunk.

On the way into the city, if you'va had enough of climbing and want to
avoid the bad bit of Toorak Rd, you can turn left about 4 streets past
Warrigal Rd into Alfred/Albert Street. Follow that until you get to
the end at Bath Rd? and turn right. Do a left and a right over the
railway bridge and then a left parallel to the railway line. Follow
the road when it turns right. Do a quick left and right at Summerhill
Rd into Ashburton Rd. Do a right and a left at Glen Iris Rd into
Kerferd Rd. At the bottom of the hill where the road turns right you
can see a bike path on the other side of a reserve. That's the
Gardiner's Creek path which will take you into the city.

Hang a left into Highfield Rd at the BP station in Hartwell. Then
right just before Lynden park. Left at the T and follow the road round
into Stornaway Rd. Keep heading east across Through Rd. Left at the
end and then Right into Oxford St. That will take you to Warrigal Rd.
You can either ride up Warrigal Rd to Burwood Hwy or take any of the
roads left off Warrigal Rd to bypass the Warrigal Rd/Burwood Hwy
intersection. Quiet roads and the only uphill bits are gentle.

At the risk of thread-jacking, I've just got a new commute as well, Oakleigh to East Kew. At the moment I've got my route to the bottom of Bourke Rd where it hits Dandenong Rd sorted, but from there I just slog up Bourke Rd until I hit Harp Rd. The hills are fairly meaty, but I'll come to deal with those. My problem is that I wind up hacking and coughing and I suspect that it's because of the exhaust fumes from the density of traffic. Ultimate destination is High St East Kew. Any reasonable alternatives to go from What amounts to Caulfield to East Kew?

you could go east along Waverley Rd and cross over the monash 'carpark' at Waverley Oval and join up to the Anniversary trail. This will get you all the way to where the trail crosses Burke Rd, for a nice roll down to HarpRd, where you can go into the Park (Stradbroke park on the corner of B urke/harp Rds) and follow the path around to High St East Kew.
And you wont see a car apart from your first and last kilometres!

Or Tooronga is less nuts than Burke Rd and has a bike lane along a vast majority of it! The hills are lesser too.
The great thing about commuting is after awhile you will find yourself taking unknown turns out of curiosity to find out what that building/tower/landmark is that you pass every day
