    I am looking at buying a used mountain bike and need someone a little more experienced than myself to let me know if this is a good deal or not. The asking price on the bike is $1000. The specs are as follows:

    Stumpjumper FSR—Custom built on a 2003 Frame

    Any advice/help would be appreciated. Also, if there is a component or two on the above list that should be upgraded, please let me know. Thanks

    That's a lot of money to spend if you know nothing about bikes. First of all does the bike fit you? Will you be riding it frequently or do you just want to show it off? Are you going to buy a bike just to see if riding is for you? If any of the questions might be answered negatively, try finding out what the resale value is in your area.

    Sounds reasonable to me. I would guess that new it would sell at around $2000 or more (I could be bit out - I'm converting from Japanese prices that I know).

    It sounds like a decent price assuming it has been taken care of. The big thing is the frame life. Has it been used as a session bike or an XC rod? XC racers usually have a service life limit of 5 or so seasons before the heavy frame inspections for cracks have to take place(in aluminum). In dirt jumping/freeride the service life is considerably shorter(as little as 2-3 yrs).
    Look it over very carefully, if there are no suspicious points around welds the frame is prob ok. To check wheel condition the easiest way is to pick it up off the ground and spin the wheel. Grip the frame right next to the axle. It shouldn't make any vibrations. If the rear makes a little bit its ok due to the ratchet, but if it does noticably vibrate, then you have a pitted bearing. Not the end of the world but something to talk down a value with. If it all checks out, then that is a deal.
