OK, on my box of tea bags it says 0 carbs but in the carb counter by Atkins it says that there is .7 carbs in 8 oz. Which one is correct and which one should I go by. I am on induction so this really makes a difference. ;-)

One other question if you don't mind, but this one is about avocados. The carb counter just mentions half an avocado but it doesn't say the size, like in weight. I have seen some really large avocados out there, but most around here are usually on the smallish side I would say. If a supermarket doesn't say if it is a Florida or a California Haas one then how do we tell the difference? The ones in the market now say Chile and I am just assuming that they mean it comes from Chile. Is that a correct assumption and if so then is it a Haas?
The small and flavorful ones are the Hasses, and the large and flavorless ones are the Florida avocados.

Last summer I started weighing avocados instead of counting by 1 or 1/2 of one. I weigh it before cutting it up, then I weigh the discarded skin and pit and subtract it from the first weight so that I'm only counting what I'm actually eating. The USDA nutritional database has a generic count for all varieties showing 45 calories, 2.39 carbs and 1.9 fiber (.49 net carbs) per one ounce (28 grams) of avocado.
Tea and coffee both have 0.8g carbs/cup according to the USDA.
This is my first big shock for 2005! I read your message and said to myself, "no way" and looked it up myself and you are right. Actually it's 0.71 carbs/8 fl ounces of brewed tea in distilled water according to the USDA site. I thought it was more like zero.
So if you are on a 20 carb/day diet and are looking for hidden carbs, there are some right there if you drink a lot of green tea like I do.
I usually drink a while 1.5 liter bottle per day. That's an extra 4.5 carbs/day I never even thought about - almost one-quarter of my daily budget! Wow!
You're very welcome. I don't follow Atkins, but I thought the induction was only for 2 weeks?

Thanks ever so much. That is really helpful. I had started a week and half ago but went off it for Christmas day and New years Eve day. But today I got up and started the induction all over and hope to be on induction for at least a month. Hopefully I can make it. Thank you for your help with this though.
I drink 3 cups of decaf coffee every morning and didn't worry about it when I was at the lower carbs. I also drink about a pitcher of Koolaid sweetened with Sweetzfree which is 0.1g/cup and didn't worry about that either. It's the only way I got my "water" during the day. :-) I don't drink pop of any kind but FitDay says 0.35g for a 12 oz. can of sugar-free cola-type drink. It would be the aspartame and caffeine that I'd be more worried about if you're trying to lose weight.

Why not just weigh what you use instead of subtracting what you don't use from the total weight? -- If you have your finger touching the rearview mirror that says "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear," how can that be possible?

Have you ever prepared an avocado? They are smushy, even when they are relatively firm. Weighing just the innards would be messy. I usually slice an avocado in half lengthwise, pop out the pit, then cube the innards, then use a spoon to scoop the cubes into my salad. Works for ME.

Most of my southern family members drinks tea made this way. Brew 4 or 5 teabags and pour into a large 1 gallon tea pitcher then fill with water. Some call it tincture rather than tea.
So 8 oz of (iced) tea for me has less than 1/4 of the carbs as my english friends.

er, why can't you just weigh the cubes?
They slide around in a messy way and also make then less appealing to eat, IMO.

Why make a mess? I COULD do that, but I choose not to do so.

they have these nifty devices called "bowls" that are helpful for putting food in.
i weigh an avocado three or four times a week, every single week. it's really not rocket surgery.

do you not put your salad in a bowl? can you not put that bowl on the scale and determine its weight before adding the avocado? how on earth is that any messier than weighing your trash?

WHY are you making such an issue out of such a simple thing as MY preferred method of weighing an avocado? It's not the LAW, it's just the way I've been doing it. It can be done a variety of ways. The POINT of my post was that it's more accurate to weigh the innards that will actually consumed than to use a vague measurement for a small, medium or large avocado. How one chooses to do that really isn't important.

i'm NOT making an ISSUE out of it, i'm MOCKING YOU. and the REASON for that is because YOUR WAY OF WEIGHING AVOCADOS IS ASS-BACKWARDS and TOTALLY MOCK-WORTHY. you are manufacturing work for yourself. i think it's kind of hilarious.
ps: i am ALSO mocking your TENDENCY TO USE ALL CAPS to EMPHASIZE THINGS. just in case you were WONDERING.
