Yes, of course you do. Hey that American guy who won the Tour six times rides a Trek, so if I buy one, I will go really fast too. 🙄

But don't bother with all that. Just buy the bike that makes you happy, and chances are you will ride it more and not be back in a shop a year from now getting what you really wanted in the first place! :p

For the record, I ride a DeRosa, so I also paid far too much for my bike, but I absolutely love it and wouldn't trade it for anything (well, almost anything) else. 😄 😄

I think you pay for the name and the fact that it is made in the U.S. You do the same thing with De Rosa, Colnago, etc. You pay for the name and the "made in Italy" prestige. Buy anything you want, screw anyone who tells you different, and ride it. If your bike makes you happy, stick with it. Many people dump on Trek because of their popularity associated with Lance, but ride what you like. You can like whatever you like for any reason you like.

You always pay more for brand name merchanise. Sometimes the brand name stuff is better than it's compitetion because of newer technology because the bigger companies can afford the latest and greatest technology but usually there is another product that is less popular, less priced, and equivalent.
