The new chopper styled Stingray is complete Wally World junk. The only reason to buy them is to sell them on ebay for a profit, which I did. 😄 Unfortunately, it's too late for that now as the market is flooded.

The late 1990's Apple, Orange and Grape krates and Sting-Rays are well made reproductions though. Can't really say the same for the 2004/05 Grey Ghost and Pea Picker reproductions. They're still much nicer than the chopper styled Stingray.

I commend and applaud your enthusiasm for cycling. I even appreciate your devotion to 'serious' biking. Judging by the description of your bikes in one of the other threads and challenging retort in yet another, you clearly have a resolute opinion of what a 'real' bicycle is. Ask yourself a few questions, however: why does it matter to you what another person rides; why is it of any consequence what makes them feel good and gives them pleasure; why does it compel you to commit violence against a kid, possibly injuring him and damaging his ride, if he rides something you don't recognize as being a 'serious' bike? Behaviour like that is foolish, reckless, immature and socially reprehensible, aside from being illegal. Should you be convicted (and you should be), you may find it even prevents you from earning a driver's license when (god-forbid) you attain legal-age and want to drive a car. At the very least, your actions may inspire a well-deserved beating at the hands of the kid's older brother or father. Only similarly-dysfunctional sociopaths would respect what you did or your intolerance of other cyclists. Operating any vehicle on the road is a privelege, not a right. You need to grow up and wise-up.

I suspect you'll be responding with some juvenile tripe and before you waste your time, I will neither be reading this thread further nor provoked into an inane exchange with you.

I have to jump in here. Walmart bikes of any price range are steaming piles that are an accident waiting to happen. I've been through 2 : one axle shattered, the other, the pedal crank snapped off crossing the street and I crashed in traffic. They're also put together by Walmart employees that are paid to do any number of things besides build bikes : I've seen brakes on upside down , wheels bent, etc. Not stuff you would want your kid ( or anyone else's ) riding .

Maybe the stingrays customized and sold by real bike shops ( with real bike ppl that put them together properly are better, but so many cruisers are on the market now that the stingray seems kind of wussy -The Ratfink bikes, now those are cool.

As if that wasn't scary enough when I was talking to my LBS guy about it he informed me some of these same parents that buy these bikes don't buy their kids helmets because they're "just kids "! :eek: WHAT?

Please do not post stuff like this, true or not. Just like riding a bike is a privilige so is using this website and being able to do it for free adds to that privilige.

The Stingray is junk, but I think a clarification needs to be made. My first bike was a Huffy Thunder Road which was also junk. I rode the heck out of that bike and loved every minute. While I would not buy a Wal-Mart bike for my kid (I even bought a Lil' Giant tricycle for mine) if a kid gets one, likes it, and rides it, what is the harm? Everyone has to start out on something. The few junk bikes I had before I saved my own $ and bought my first real bike (a Raleigh Technium something with new indexed shifting) made the real bike that much sweeter. If someone rides, who cares what they ride. I don't ride what I would ultimately like either.

Stupid?? No not really.

I love to see anything that gets kids out of the house and riding more. My kids both road race and have pretty nice road bikes but when they saw the sting ray for the first time they thought it looked cool. I doubt that either one of them would ride it more than a few times before returning to their road bikes but there was a definite appeal. Say what you want about x-mart bikes but almost everybody I know started out riding one. If you consider x-mart bikes as entry level cheap bikes that gets people riding more then they do a good job. If you are trying to compare the x-mart bikes to LBS bikes then they fail to compare. It all depends on your perspective/purpose for buying & riding.
