I used to run in my school days - 8 years. It was mandatory. I would
be forced to wake up at 5am with a kick in the butt. Once I was out
of that environment, running ceased and I used to wake up more like
at 7am. Running wasn't a popular activity.
I still can't recall what caused me to start jogging in early 1998
after
a lapse of 20 years - was it my bloating waistline, or fear of farting
in public? Nonetheless I started jogging gradually. I vividly remember
my first jog of an hour - albeit slow. Right after the jog I felt the
urge to empty my bowels - good signs.
At my place of work I came to know of a running club, not very popular
considering there were only about 50 members out of a workforce of
about
5000. I joined AARC (American Airlines Running Club). Hello to AARC
(Jeph
Abara et al)! It helped me greatly. A monthly calendar of running
events
in and around DFW was circulated and I found myself running one race
every
month. My timings started improving and life wasn't bad.
Then on account of my work we moved to Monterey Peninsula. Beautiful
place.
Although dirt trails were not closeby I was able to run along the ocean
and enjoy the breeze and the scenery. Then a series of mishaps
happenned -
fracture on my right foot, shin splints, soft tissue injuries, passed
out
while jogging etc. All the while didn't cease eating - no control over
my
diet. As a result my waistline grew and I must have gained 20 lbs or so
and
definitely slowed down. (I clocked 42:04 in a 5M race in 1999 and 59:50
in
2004 - disgraceful).
Everytime I decided to run a Half Marathon, I would suffer an injury on
account of ignorance (increasing workout too quickly). Finally I ran a
Half
in Oct/2004 and completed it, with just 3 weeks of preparation. I have
been
exercising regularly at a gym since then (cross-training on ellipse
machine,
bicycle etc, running on treadmill, lift some light weights with reps,
and so
on). My timings have been improving and hopefully will continue until I
hit
the plateau sometime.
That was the not-too-difficult part. Now for the hard part. On New
Year's
day I resolved to lose 20 lbs. Hopefully that will have some effect on
my
waistline as well. I have been weighing myself for a while with no hope
in
sight. Since it has been only 3 months since I started exercising
regulary,
I find myself getting more hungry and as a result I have been consuming
a
bit more food than usual.
How do I lose 20 lbs this year? Appreciate any suggestions.
