i did a search for tandem bikes on this forum and came up with no threads...?
i'm interested in a tandem and would like info as to what the thing is that allows for independent peddle rpms.
which bikes have it? who thinks its a good thing or not?
should i be looking for this info somewhere else?
cu, larryb
Bilenky and Santana have it as an option. Some recumbent tandems like Vision and Screamer have it. I have ridden it with 2 different stokers. With one stoker who wasn't used to it, we didn't see any advantages, and I felt much less comfortable in corners. With the other stoker it was fine, but I still saw no advantage. I think you need to ride both and see how it feels to you. The only time I can see that it might be an advantage is where getting "communications through the synch chain" seems to be a struggle.
My wife and I have a Trek T1000 tandem. During my research for a tandem I never heard of such a device that allows different pedal RPM for the captain and stoker. Maybe there is.... but I’m not sure if it would be practical. I’m thinking of cornering. Or what would happen if my size 48 foot was at the 3:00 position and my wife’s feet would be at the 9:00 position on the same side of the bike. Our feet could possibly interfere (hit) with the others????
