I'm sure you all read the just released government reformulation of the old food pyramid. At first blush it seems to not want to disparage any of the big Washington lobbists. I'm not going to go into it now but man we're already seeing the damage control all over the place! Just about every threatened food group has issued a press release praising their item as wonderfully conforming to the new recommendations. Rice, potato, pasta, grains, fruit, etc etc. Already seen today are TV commercials touting cereals as "whole grain". The study is pretty wishy washy in actually telling you what to eat, so it will be interpreted in many different ways.

Obviously a lot of time and money goes into these government guidelines but you have to wonder whether they have any significant effect. I hear people talking all the time about their diets, from Atkins to Ornish, but I have never, not once, heard anyone say the he or she was following the government recommendations.
Unfortunately, the corporate food manufacturers take this [censored] seriously.
I read parts of it from the pdf files. I was looking for a new food pyramid graphic, but didn't find one. There were several references to "low fat."
The new graphics were very telling. Lots of images of carbs. Even the fats section included images of apples.

I suppose they have to, just in case it really affects people's eating habits. So they all lobby really hard to have their products favored regardless of the science which is why the guidelines are a political compromise (or, to put it another way, useless [censored]).

Two correctos. The original pyramid was taught as science in schools private and public all over America. The psychological and economic impact was staggering.
If you for one minute believe that we are not manipulated in some of the most insidious and invisible ways, then you are living in a fantasy world.
