  1. I've been searching for a supplier of Seville oranges in Arizona or
California. I realize they are available but haven't had any luck so far.
I'd give my eyeteeth to cook up a batch of "real" marmalade!

Dora, most of the sour oranges in Arizona are grown private for ornamental
purposes, and most people will gladly give them away. All you need do is
ask, or if by a public roadway, just pick! There's a cemetery in Phoenix
that's encircled by sour orange trees and the fruit is free for the picking.
I'm not sure if those particular ones are ripe right now, however.

I don't know that much about citrus trees, but here in the Phoenix area,
various citrus seems to ripen year 'round. I'm not sure what determines
their growth cycle, but there's always some place with ripe oranges.

Well, that's certainly news. Unfortunately, I live in Maryland; that's why
I was wondering if there were a commercial supplier. I have searched all
three main citrus sites - Florida, California and Arizona. People don't
know what they're missing! Thanks, Wayne.

    Dora
P.S. - Just a request. I don't titter and giggle then blurt out. Please
stop it, at least for me. Thanks.

Oh, I don't know, Dora. I think I caught you at least once tittering and
gigling! Well, you can see I changed it at least this once. <G>

If you can get ahold of some Meyer lemons, common enough in our area
of California, they make great mammalade. Meyer lemons are really sour
oranges. This isn't the classic marmalade made with Seville sour
oranges, but it is wonderful in its own right.

If you're lucky, you have a neighbor who has or knows someone who has
a Meyer lemon tree that they would love to give away fruit from.

If you get some, try a Meyer lemon vinagrette as well.

Thanks - I'll explore that idea. Sorry, I'm in the wrong part of the
country to have a Meyer lemon tree but certainly wish I could have citrus
    groves in my back yard!

sorry, I inferred, wrongly, that you were in California. I suspect
there is no chance of finding a Meyer lemon in the grocery. Strictly a
backyard tree in the golden state.

I don't know about CA, but it's illegal to grow Meyer lemons in AZ as well
as brining them into the state.

WHAT???? When the word "orange" is used in a description,
that doesn't make it an orange.

I've never researched the details, but Meyer lemon plants can be and often
are carriers of some type of disease that could endanger other citrus. At
least that's what I've been told.

A little followup... The Meyer lemon can harbor the citrus tristeza virus to
which it is immune, but can pass it to other sweet citrus plants. The virus
is said to be capable of eradicating an entire grove of fruit trees.

Yes, we have many citrus groves of all varieties, as well as peach
orchards. We also grow vast quantites of pecans and dates, and many
    agricultural crops. It's a desert, but it's well-irrigated.
