  1. So I've been on Atkins for a little over three weeks now.

(I hate this part, I know I need to type up the basic background info
if I want any useful input, it's just so depressing.)

I'm an extremely resistant loser, father is morbidly obese, rest of
family is overweight. I've been overweight since age eight. Nothing
has ever caused me to lose weight except phentermine. The only upside
to that is I have never tortured my body with yo-yo dieting (except
the one round of phen loss), because I can't lose weight.

I've made several attempts at Atkins over the last ten years, usually
giving up after anywhere from a few days (lack of willpower) to a few
weeks (lack of movement on the scale--my weight will usually stay
rock-solid to the half-pound, even if I am in ketosis).

This is the longest I have stayed faithful, at induction levels of
carbs. I've gotten a lot more control over my eating now, much less
impulsiveness and cravings. I've been in small to mod ketosis the
whole time. I am very happy to finally be sticking with it, I think it
is partially due to maturity/focus levels. And also due to the fact
that I haven't weighed myself. There is nothing as discouraging as the
same exact numbers. Every. Single. Day.

No, my scale is not broken.

Being that I'm not willing to torture myself with weighing (on a daily
basis), I've been trying to judge by my clothes getting looser. So far
they haven't changed. In fact, tighter the last few days. Maybe PMS,
but I would hope there would be some sort of baseline change. Sigh. I
understand that until I am willing to weigh myself, there's only
limited advice that can be offered.

Anyway, while feeling bloated and gross yesterday, I finally started
with Fitday, and have discovered that I'm eating far fewer calories
than I would have guessed. In the 1500 cal range, 50-60% from fat
(based on only 2 days of data, of course), at 5'5", 33 and moderate
    activity level (I'm a fidgety/constant housework/errands/can't sit
still person). I'm very exact with the portions and whatnot when I am
filling in what I have eaten, down to butter and condiments. I cook a
lot, I know what an ounce is and I mostly only use fresh stuff anyway.

So I'm just wondering, (god I can hardly type it because it just
seems like the ultimate rationalization), is it possible that I am
having trouble on my lowcarb attempts due to not eating enough? I've
seen my maintenance calories listed as anywhere from 2100 to 2600 (!!)
but I am really dubious of that whole starvation threshhold thing,
especially as I know I can't trust my body/brain to be reasonable
about what it is telling me for hunger levels.

Well, guess I partially needed to journalize a little, but feedback is
appreciated. Going to continue to log in Fitday, and may venture to
try the scale at the start of the next cycle.

    Thanks for reading.

  2. Hang in there Keelie. Are you getting any walking in? taking care of a
family is tiring for sure, but 1/2 hour on my treadmill confirmed I was out
of shape. Time for some "me time" That exercise just might kick start that
    loss your looking for.

You can do this. I finally lost my weight at age 51, I thought I was doomed
to be big. I've been following Atkins for 13 months now, take the atkins
supplements and get on my treadmill or walk if I want to see that weight go
down- I didn't walk all summer and guess what- very little weight loss even
though I still stuck to the plan. I'm back on the "mill" and took up cross
country skiing, and the scale is starting to move again.

Hang in there! Up until now, you've mostly lost water, so it may not be
so apparent in size changes yet. You should start to lose FAT now.

PMS WILL pack more water on, which is REALLY annoying, but there's not
much we can do about it other than to carry on. I actually found that
my cycle-associated water gain was good training for me to learn to just
relax and stay the course even when I didn't see any progress and
instead saw sudden gains. I stayed the course and DID lose weight --
just not on MY timetable :-) I lose VERY slowly and long ago gave up
setting a DATE for reaching my goal weight. The REALLY odd thing about
my change in mindset is that now, as I get closer to my TOM, I actually
start to look FORWARD to it -- not because I like it (far FROM it), but
because if I AM going to lose any weight, it won't be until AFTERWARD.

It's taken me over 19 months to lose 61 lbs (but I'm very sedentary),
but I DID lose it and plan to lose more. It may not be as fast as I
would like, but it's a HELL of a lot better than where I started from.
You started out at just a little over what I weighed the day I started
Atkins. I GUARANTEE you that the results are worth the time it takes
(check out the progress photos in my sig for inspiration)!

Keelie, are you getting any exercise like walking? It sure does help get
the weight off. I'm walking from 1 to 2 miles a day and after a 2 1/2 year
plateau I just lost 5 lbs. I'm following a low-carb WW plan this time -
mainly for the variety and am on about 1200 calories a day. :-)

  12. I'm waiting for my next pound to drop, but I'll have to wait and be
surprised since even though I'm doing the right things, I only drop weight
at a certain time of the month- if I screw up, I don't get to cash in that
month -that's just the way it is with me.

I think we all lose differently, never straight down. Keep recording your
eats and you will find your nitch, what works and what doesn't. I'm glad
your able to keep in control this time.

I've got my Son's birthday cake in the kitchen today. I think that after the
day is over- the rest goes in the freezer. Like I said, I want this months
pound off of me. Its slow after 52 lost, but I think I can still get down
    more.

I worked my butt off today at work- but it wasn't aerobic- and I'm still
sore from hubby taking me out skiing. somehow I'm going to get my sore legs
    on the treadmill.

Yes, I've always lost slowly. I lost 7 lbs the first week, but didn't
lose another lb until almost 3 weeks later. It took me 4 months to lose
20 lbs. I'm 49 and have some physical problems, though, so I just had

0.5 mile is really not enough exercise - that's only 10 minutes of leisurely
walk. that's about as much as I do just running around at workplace every day
stealing coffee from my colleagues, getting water from the office's
water-fountain, and walking to and from the toilet. i think you need something
to get your heart rate up.

go and do some exercise - it's good for you. makes you healthier and improves
confidence to no ends. don't see exercise as an mean to an end. i think
everyone should exercise just for the fun of it. and it makes you sleep better
at night - it's an effect you get RIGHT AWAY, not a month later, not 10 years
down the road, but TONIGHT! ask about exercising ideas and loads of ASDLC-ers
    would be glad to share.

    i'm human.

are you really going to try to tell me that you're so lacking in common
sense that you believe 1500 calories a day is starving yourself, or are
you going to realize that you are, indeed, just trying to rationalize
    things?

if you're really hungry, you can probably get away with 2-300 more
calories a day, but if you're not hungry and you're not exercising much
don't bother. you're nowhere near "starvation" on 1500 calories a day.
    the very notion is nonsensical.
