Two runners in our training group have the Garmin GPS. One has the 201
(no HR monitor), the other has the 301 (with HR Monitor). Seems that you
can geek out all you want with either of them (I believe the 301 has USB
support and software). I have been impressed with the info provided and
their reliability. As usual, they are "line of sight" dependant for the
GPS signal, but no more so than any of the others (so I'm told). A bit
pricey-about $175-$200 for the 201, and about $325 for the 301. They
look a bit clunky to me, but the wearers say it doesn't bother them in

Quality is a function of design, materials, and craftsmanship.
Inspection can only confirm quality or reveal deficiencies.
In no case, can quality be inspected into anything.

If you check around, you can get the 201 for around $125. I did a
froogle search for mine and found three vendors at that price. (That
was several months ago, hopefully the price has gone Down and not Up!)
I like mine a LOT!

Yeah, I was looking at full boat retail. For $125 this cheapskate might
even consider one. Good price.

The 201 was $115 with free shipping at Amazon last time I looked. It's been
as low as $110 on Amazon in the last 2-3 months.

is very unreliable trail running , even with no leaves. I do my long
distance runs are usualy trail runs so it's kinda of worthless then.
I'm thinkin of using a cheapy step counter on my next long trail run.
I'd like the Polar 625 but they're too expensive right now. I think
Nike has a think that slips on your shoe that can tell you pace and
distance and thats only like 100 bucks I think.

I also have the 201. I have not had any problems even on trail runs. My
trails are mostly through tall pines. Maybe the satellite signal is somehow
cutting through where there is no greenery.

I have a Timex and my wife has a Garmin so I have used both. For
strickly running features I prefer the Timex. It has the drawback of
the arm band but you don't really even notice wearing it. Also uses AA
batteries but if you use NIMH rechargeable that is not an issue. It has
been much more reliable as far as losing the GPS signal. The user
interface is much easier to use, the Garmin just has too many menu
layers. But Garmin has tracking and waypoint features to keep you from
getting lost and mapping your route and it can store your runs.

You know that stride rate is largely constant as a function of pace,
right ? So you may as well just record the amount of time you were running
for. The doodads will be sufficiently accurate if you want to just log
milage, but so will a guess from a reasonably experienced runner.
