A friend of mine around here was a mtb cop for a few years before he
got promoted to a desk. He really liked it, lots of friendly
interaction with people, outside all the time, lots of exercise in
frequent short spurts, anyway. Not a prestigious position, but who
cares? They patrolled our parks mostly and got to chase bad guys
(breaking up drug sales, deterring would-be muggers, etc.) pretty
frequently. They rode these ht GFishers loaded down with gear. Only
downside was staying warm in the winter.

But that's what donuts and coffee are for, right? cop food.

I rode with a guy once who use to be a forest ranger. His job was to ride
his mtb and patrol the park. He'd also kick out illegal mtbrs when the park
was closed. I think this was somewhere in California.

I ocassional rode with a roadie who was a regular cop. I asked him once
what happens when he hassled by cars while riding his bike. These idiots
obiviously don't know he's a cop. He said he just memorizes their license
number. Later he'll put on his uniform go to the idiot's house and say "Do
you remember me? I'm the guy on the bike you try to run off the road".
Too bad he wasn't around when I get hassled. Being a cop is cool.

I have these dudes in my incorporated village but no where near any
trails. These guys pedal around town wearing black lycra shorts and
bright yellow jackets with "SCPD" on them. They all ride the same model
TREK, wear black helmets and dark shades. They are mostly there to keep
the public peace and to write traffic tickets, but I did actually see
one pull someone over in a car for not having a seatbelt on.

I was almost tempted to ride one of my rigs on the sidewalk and see if
one of them would chase me out of the village.

foot down at a stop sign. How ridiculous is that? Do car drivers have to
open their car doors and put a foot down?

And the $45 ticket for no lights at night, for each light.

You can get a $45 ticket for riding with only a front brake. You can also
get the same one for riding without a seat.

Then there's all the regular ones... sidewalk riding... riding on the wrong
side of the road...

And everything else is categorized under "reckless driving."

I'd rather pay higher taxes than have to wade through the legal morass known
as the "judicial system." I've paid about half of the total wages I've ever
earned from my job at my bicycle shop in fees to the state. Once the US
becomes a police state, I will have been long gone.

I cannot wait to leave this town occupied by officers with nothing else
better to do.

Thankfully, they're, um, slow and can't keep up with me. 😉

"hassling" you - they're doing their jobs.

a commuter cyclist before aggressive drivers drove me to MTBing. And

up as you went along. Is it any wonder drivers hate cyclists? If you

Wow, and I thought they were morons in my village. Your story has me
really [censored]. Especially, with the no-hands and putting your foot down
at a traffic light. I'm guilty of both those things every day I ride in
town. And those $45 tickets can add up. Well, at least you can book
like the road runner... *beep-beep*

Trim the parts of posts that aren't relevant to your response. Makes

Getting right-hooked sucks. And idiots turn left in front of you, etc.
But since drivers have a louder political voice (and can get laws
changed to get bikes off the roads,) we have to be especially careful
to obey the rules. Hell, drivers break almost all the rules all the
time, but drivers save their loudest pissing and moaning over
bicyclists who might just happen to disobey a law or two. So, if we
want to commute, we have to keep our noses clean. I gave up bike
commuting, but it still burns me to see folks completely disregard
traffic law when they're on bikes.
