Free newsserver (not)

Just got this e-mail from NIN;

Dear users of News.Individual.NET,

effective from April 1th, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET will
not be free of charge anymore. The news service will continue as
a fee-based service.

the fee is 10 euro a year.

GG2Beta is free and seems to work now

Wow there are some real cheapskates around. 10euro a year!!! I'd be
happy to pay that if only port 21 weren't blocked by my employer. I
have no choice but to use GG2Beta. Bad formatting and useless adverts.

yebbut it's another minor hassle I could do without - it also looked
like it would be taken as a monthly fee (I gave up at that point so
could be wrong) which is pretty tedious - who wants a credit card bill
for that much every month?

I now remember that mine was pretty flaky last time I tried, but it

Do you mean "Wpisz odczytane slowo"? It's the only other blue box I can
see. It's a standard anti-bot thingy where you enter the word
[slovo=word in Russian, one of the half-dozen Russian words I know] you
can see in the jpg immediately above.

10 Euro at once.

I am frankly gobsmacked at how many people are complaining about this on
the groups I read. It's not as if individual.net are asking for the moon
on a stick after all.

I used Google groups before I knew what a newsserver (or even Usenet) was,
so no big deal to go back to it, but for someone who wants to use a
newsreader 10 eu is peanuts as you say.

Perhaps you should thank all those people for helping to keep prices low
for everyone by the effort they put into shopping around.

Shopping around is fine - but what I'm seeing is whinging because
people who were providing an excellent free service (without having had
any obligation to do so) are now asking for a modest payment to support
their work.

It's rather like shareware that's had an extremely long trial period
really.

I suspect their hand was forced. They have good commercial reasons for
keeping their kit and services going, and allowing a comparatively
small number of individual users to wander unpaid through their
newsgroup halls was a nice public service which simply consumed minor
amounts of unused bandwidth. It cost them nothing, and trying to
profit from it was probably not worth the effort of collecting the
money.

But AOL was recently scared by their lawyers into dumping their
newsgroup services. Suddenly a horde of ex-AOLers descended upon the
"free german news server", and no doubt, being ex-AOLers, some of them
needed a bit of hand-holding, and being ex-AOLers, some of them were
probably pretty rude about it. So a minimum fee was charged to
stampede the herd in a different direction.

Just an educated guess :-)
