suggestions: frame pump

  1. I finally broke my frame pump and am looking for a new one. What is the
    best frame pump out there? I am using presta valves and running over 100
    psi on my road tires. I don't want CO2. Suggestions appreciatd. thanks, JC

    I used to swear by my old Silca. It still works fine, but I've
    switched to a Topeak Road Morph pump:

    It works fine: it's more like a little floor pump (complete with gauge)
    and it's far less cumbersome to use than my old frame pump. 100 psi is
    easy, too.

    Recommendation (if you don't already do this): get a floor pump and use
    it for checking and topping off tires at home. Reserve the frame pump
    for emergency on-the-road use.

    Any of the full sized frame pumps from major brands seem to work well --
    Blackburn, Zefal, Topeak, etc., as long as you stick to the high pressure "road"
    models. When you get into the mini-pumps they start to get dicey.

    I've had Zefal HPX pumps on my road bikes for years and quite like
    them, however I bought a Topeak RoadMorph for my touring bike and have
    been pretty pleased with that also.

    I'll say Zefal hpx, but I'll also qualify it by saying that the plastic
    curved tabs where the pump touches the frame can break off in use. This
    doesn't make the pump fall off but it's a bit [censored] in a 20UKP product.

    I'll doubtless get flamed for this, but the long skinny Performance
    "Hurricane" frame pump works surprisingly well and easily. Get one on sale
    (like, $12.99? $9.99??), and it's downright cheap. (Like me.)

  10. Bursting in with a side question (so top posting) : why do they only come as
    CO2 and not just plain air ? CO2 seems to leak out at an astoundingly fast
    rate, must cost more to segregate than just putting air into cylinders.

    Why oh why CO2 ?

    Maybe because it has no water vapor to it? Under compression, the
    moisture might become a factor? Just a guess. thanks to everyone for the

    The plastic tabs are replaceable and the pump is guaranteed for life.

    CO2 molecules are larger than N2, so it shouldn't leak out faster than
    plain air. Compressed CO2 (at normal temperatures) takes a liquid form so
    it's relatively dense at relatively low pressure -- in order to get the
    same amount of air into the same size container, you have to pump the
    pressure higher. That makes pumping CO2 into containers cheaper than
    pumping in plain air, and it makes releasing pressure from a CO2 container
    much safer. That's why it's possible to use a CO2 fire extinguisher with
    one hand -- if you tried releasing pressure from a tank of plain air of
    similar size with similar contents, it'd blow you backwards. That's also
    the reason why paintball enthusiasts prefer to use compressed air: it
    pushes those paintball pellets much farther than compressed CO2.

    I bought several last year, and wound up liking the Blackburn best. It
    is well made and the foldover handle is nice allowing it to be used much
    like a floor pump. The Road master blaster from my LBS is good. The
    Zefal HPX is OK, but I found it to be rather cheep -- of considerably
    lower quality than my old Zefal HPS. I didn't try Topek, and the Silca
    pumps I have are very old and will not pump to as high a pressure as the
    modern ones.

    I gave away the Topeak road morph and went back to a full size frame
    pump (HpX in my case). The road morph was slightly easier to set up,
    took forever to get up to 100 psi, pinched my fingers, and in general
    was a hassle. I find it easier to top 75 psi with the HpX, so I
    prefer the full size pump.

    The real explanation is the solubility of a particular gas
    in rubber, not the size of its molecules.

    The air we breathe is about 80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and
    only 0.03% CO2.

    Nitrogen seeps out through rubber slowly, ordinary air a bit
    faster, oxygen much faster, and pure CO2 goes through rubber
    like--

    Zefal HPX, IMHO, is the most reliable and among the easiest
    to pump to road pressures

    Having looked at Carl's references, I am willing to accept their
    conclusions. My own are only from experience, knowing that you have to
    replenish the tire relatively quickly, if it's full of CO2.

    Amount - what measure ? weight shouldn't matter - expanded volume in a tube
    at 8 bars ?

    I'm too sleepy to be sure I get this. I thought that if the objective were
    to achieve a pressure equilibrium of around 8 bars after releasing the
    compressed gas, the closed pressure of the cartridge would be the same.
    What am I failing to grasp ? Is it the conversion to liquid when
    pressurized in the cartridge that makes this work ?
