  1. Just what muscle groups do deadlifts develop and how?

I can understand how leg development occurs since you start at a bent
    leg position and straighten up.

But what about the arms and upper body? You dont actually move
anything. Your upper body and arms remain static.

Difficult to imagine how muscle development is possible.

Why would you want to respond to quite legitimate questions, even if
you do consider them to be somewhat naive, in such a hostile and
    sarcastic way?

If you don't want to discuss or help, just ignore the OP. Giving him
smug put-downs is very poor instructional technique and will only
discourage people, or make them want to respond in similar manner,
much like it did me all those years ago!!

Don't [censored] and whine again if you get it back in spades!!

If you're interested in reading about the benefits of the deadlift,
consider the book "Power To The People!" by Pavel Tsatsouline. Reading
it convinced me of the benefits of deadlifting and I haven't looked back
    since. http://www.kbnj.com/ptp.htm

The entire dorsal chain from Hams to traps.

You also straighten up your back and your shoulders have to hold on
tight to keep from being ripped apart. (assuming you lift heavy
    enough)

Static contraction is a legitimate exercise. (assuming you lift heavy
    enough)
Your traps have to hold your shoulders in place, your biceps have to
keep your forearm attached (ask Keith), your lats keep your shoulders
back, your erectors keep your back straight, your but keeps you
upright and with the hams help get the bar moving.

    Tell you what.
Do a heavy deadlift workout. Find out just how much you can lift for
one rep then drop back and do 10 singles every 30 seconds at 75% of
that. Report back in two days to tell us what hurts. (assuming you
    lift heavy enough)

Last summer I was trying to pull a max deadlift in the gym. Legs were fine,
got the bar up, standing up, but with my shoulders forward, and I didn't
really feel like trying to pull them back. So no lift, because my upper body
(traps, I'd guess) hadn't pulled hard enough. So I certainly need to have
traps providing force doing deadlifts, and probably also doing a bit of
work. In which case doing deadlifts would tend to cause trap development.

It's only been asked a zillion times. Google has plenty of "replies".

Well, then maybe we don't even need a newsgroup. You can just google
whatever information you need on lifting, training, nutrition, etc. It's
    all on the web somewhere.

I don't understand the offense people take at questions that have been

We get no sympathy by blaming the match officials, and it won't alter
the result, but it was particularly hard to bear today, with most of
the 50-50 decisions going against us, and two perfectly good tries
    disallowed!!

Add to that the fact that O'Driscoll had a foot in touch before
scoring the winning 7 points, and it will be seen that we had a torrid
day with the final score 19-13!

The 22nd November 2003 seems a very long time ago!!

There are some new questions or new slants.

In the field of Physical Training and Fitness, Training with weights
and other related activities, there really is rarely anything that
isn't already well known, apart from changes in style or what happens
    to be in vogue.

This means inevitably that new people will come here and ask oft
repeated questions. Treat them with a little dignity or leave them
alone is the decent thing to do.

If that was what you were truely after, you would be answering the
questions that you could in the manner you claim that they should be
    answered.

Since you don't answer the questions, I suspect that, instead, we are
seeing jealousy and/or envy on your part and that you troll the ones

In a more serious vein, DLs have been suggested to be the most
systemically taxing lift as they recruit the entire body.

Regardless, you may put in your order for said Fairy Traps, but just
be aware the they require accessorizing with lats, serratus,
rhomboids, posterior delts, spinal erectors and (god forbid) oblique
    abdominals.

As you can see, the complete kit and kabootle is rather 'taxing.' In
    Texas, that's 8.25%

You may submit the taxing to me.
