I disagree with you, slightly. While the number are basically junk, they are
still useful for comparative reasons. If you know about what you're eating
and about how much energy you expend via exercise, then you have a basis for
increasing either to get more results. For example, if you're eating X
calories per day and doing Y minutes of exercise whatever at the gym, and
are not seeing results, then you can decide to either eat less than X
calories or do more than Y minutes of exercise, or both, until the scales
change.
So, while the numbers themselves, both for calories eaten and energy
expended, aren't necessarily accurate, then can be very useful for achieving
weight loss over time, if used correctly.
